July 2008 marks the 2-year anniversary of the beginning of the CIMSS<\/strong><\/a> \/ SSEC<\/strong><\/a> effort to provide MODIS imagery and products in AWIPS<\/strong><\/a>. Mostly cloud-free conditions over Wisconsin on 14 July 2008<\/strong><\/a> allowed for a nice sample of 12 of these MODIS images and products (above)<\/strong>,<\/em> which are all available to NWS forecast offices to add to their local AWIPS workstations (via Unidata LDM subscription):<\/em><\/p>\n

  2. 1.3 \u00c2\u00b5m Cirrus detection<\/strong><\/a> (MODIS Band 26)<\/li>\n
  3. 2.1 \u00c2\u00b5m Snow\/ice discrimination<\/strong><\/a> (MODIS Band 7)<\/li>\n
  4. 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Shortwave IR<\/strong><\/a> (MODIS Band 20)<\/li>\n
  5. 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Water vapor<\/strong><\/a> (MODIS Band 27)<\/li>\n
  6. 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR window<\/strong><\/a> (MODIS Band 31)<\/li>\n
  7. Land Surface Temperature<\/strong><\/a> (LST) product<\/li>\n
  8. Sea Surface Temperature<\/strong><\/a> (SST) product<\/li>\n
  9. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index<\/strong><\/a> (NDVI) product<\/li>\n
  10. Cloud Phase<\/strong><\/a> product<\/li>\n
  11. Cloud Top Temperature<\/strong><\/a> product<\/li>\n
  12. Total Precipitable Water<\/strong><\/a> (TPW) product<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    (Note: a MODIS 11.0-3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Fog\/Stratus product<\/strong><\/a> is also available on AWIPS; however, this is a night-time only product, so it was not included with the other daytime MODIS images shown above)<\/em><\/p>\n

    These MODIS images and products in AWIPS offer NWS forecasters an opportunity to begin evaluating and using some of the types of data that will be available with the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument<\/strong><\/a> on the upcoming GOES-R<\/strong><\/a> satellite (scheduled to be launched in 2015)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    To date, 49 NWS forecast offices have participated in the “MODIS Products in AWIPS<\/strong><\/a>” VISIT distance learning lesson (above)<\/strong><\/em> that has been offered on the VISIT training calendar since November 2006. As a result, 25 NWS offices have added the CIMSS MODIS imagery and products to their local AWIPS workstations (below)<\/strong>,<\/em> with MODIS being mentioned in 56 NWS Area Forecast Discussions so far.<\/p>\n
