The fire&#8217;s thermal signature was evident in a 2-day animation of 5-minute PACUS Sector GOES-18 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em>\u00a0Microphysics RGB images and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/ngfs\/\"><strong>Next Generation Fire System<\/strong><\/a> (NGFS) Fire Detection polygons from 19-21 January <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the initial fire detection signal was seen in the GOES-18 Microphysics RGB image at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/01\/260119_1521utc_goes18_microphysicsRGB_initial_detection.png\"><strong>1521 UTC<\/strong><\/a>, the initial NGFS Fire Detection polygons appeared at 1606 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/01\/260119_1606utc_goes18_microphysicsRGB_ngfs_initial_detection.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/01\/260119_1606utc_goes18_microphysicsRGB_ngfs_initial_detection.png\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1754\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Microphysics RGB image at 1606 UTC on 19 January, with the initial detection of NGFS Fire Detection polygons [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A probe of the NGFS Fire Detection polygons at 0451 UTC on 20 January <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed a 3.9 \u00b5m infrared brightness temperature of 137\u00baC &#8212; which is the saturation temperature of GOES-18 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a> Band 7 detectors.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/01\/260120_0451utc_goes18_microphysicsRGB_ngfsProbe.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2026\/01\/260120_0451utc_goes18_microphysicsRGB_ngfsProbe.png\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1754\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Microphysics RGB image at 0451 UTC on 20 January, with a probe of NGFS Fire Detection polygons [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>On 20 January, GOES-18 GeoColor RGB images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the south-southeast transport of smoke from the Havasu Fire &#8212; hazy conditions were reported in Lake Havasu City during the day.
