microwave imagery from the polar-orbiting SSM\/I instrument <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> began to show better evidence of an eye structure a few hours before the geostationary satellite imagery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_ssmi_mw.gif\" title=\"SSMI\/I microwave image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_ssmi_mw.gif\" title=\"SSM\/I microwave image\" alt=\"SSM\/I microwave image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>GOES-12 visible imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a closer view of the forming eye of the hurricane.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_g12_vis.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_g12_vis.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"479\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A plot of the CIMSS <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\/misc\/adt\/info.html\" title=\"Advanced Dvorak Technique\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Advanced Dvorak Technique<\/strong><\/a> intensity estimate <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that Bertha began a period of more rapid intensification during the early morning hours of 07 July.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_adt.gif\" title=\"Advanced Dvorak Technique intensity plot\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_adt.gif\" title=\"Advanced Dvorak Technique intensity plot\" alt=\"Advanced Dvorak Technique intensity plot\" align=\"middle\" height=\"369\" width=\"491\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bertha had been moving northwestward over increasingly warmer Sea Surface Temperatures <em><strong>(below)<\/strong>,<\/em> which may have played a role in the intensification of the tropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_sst.jpg\" title=\"Sea Surface Temperature analysis\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_sst.jpg\" title=\"Sea Surface Temperature data\" alt=\"Sea Surface Temperature data\" align=\"middle\" height=\"437\" width=\"497\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> Hurricane Bertha rapidly intensified into a <strong>Category 3<\/strong> storm during the afternoon hours on 07 July, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_adt_bertha_2.gif\" title=\"CIMSS ADT intensity plot\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>CIMSS ADT<\/strong><\/a> intensity estimation technique suggesting peak wind speeds near 115 knots. During this period of rapid intensification, Bertha also displayed a nice eye on satellite imagery (<strong>QuickTime animations:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_g12_vis_2.mov\" title=\"GOES-12 visible images (QuickTime animation)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GOES-12 visible<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080707_g12_ir_2.mov\" title=\"GOES-12 IR images (QuickTime animation)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GOES-12 IR<\/strong><\/a>). It is interesting to note that the <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/real-time\/tpw2\/natl\/main.html\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water \" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that dry <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\/misc\/sal\/info.html\" title=\"Saharan Air Layer (SAL)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Saharan Air Layer (SAL)<\/strong><\/a> air had wrapped completely around Bertha during the 05-08 July period &#8212; the presence of such dry air in close proximity to a tropical cyclone would normally be thought of as a negative factor for rapid intensification!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080708_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/07\/080708_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"228\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Bertha became the first hurricane of the season in the Atlantic Basin on 07 July 2008,\u00c2\u00a0 setting a new record for the furthest-east named storm formation in the tropics.
