The pyroCb cloud pulses exhibited a cloud-top 10.4 \u00b5m infrared brightness temperature (IRBT) of -40\u00baC (denoted by darker blue pixels) or colder \u2014 a necessary condition to be classified as a pyroCb, since that temperature assured that heterogeneous glaciation had occurred at the cloud top &#8212; with some IRBTs of the larger pyroCb clouds in the -65 to -69\u00baC range (darker shades of green). In addition, note that the pyroCb cloud tops appeared as <em>darker<\/em> shades of gray in the Shortwave Infrared images, due to enhanced solar reflection off the <em>smaller<\/em> smoky ice crystals.<\/p>\n<p>Himawari-9 Fire Temperature RGB + Infrared Window images viewed using <a href=\"https:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0indicated that the large bushfire was burning just south of Durham, Queensland.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3006px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/12\/251213_himawari9_fireTemperatureRGB_infraredWindow_Australia_pyroCbs.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/12\/251213_0600utc_himawari9_fireTemperatureRGB_infraredWindow_Australia_pyroCbs.png\" width=\"2996\" height=\"1744\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">10-minute Himawari-9 Fire Temperature RGB + Infrared Window (10.4 \u00b5m) images, from 0230-0900 UTC on 13 December [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>According to a plot of rawinsonde data from Charlesville, Queensland at 2300 UTC on 12 December <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0&#8212; about 4 hours prior to the initial pyroCb pulse &#8212; the coldest pyroCb cloud-top IRBTs in the -65 to -69\u00baC range were near or just above the Most Unstable (MU) air parcel&#8217;s Equilibrium Level (EL), and just above the local tropopause.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 3006px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/12\/251212_2300utc_ybcv_raob.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/12\/251212_2300utc_ybcv_raob.png\" width=\"2996\" height=\"1662\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plot of rawinsonde data from Charleville, Queensland at 2300 UTC on 12 December [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>10-minute Full Disk scan JMA Himawari-9 AHI Visible, Shortwave Infrared and Infrared Window images (above)\u00a0showed multiple pulses of pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) clouds that were spawned by a large bushfire in southwest Queensland, Australia on 13 December 2025.
