With a ridge of high pressure north of Hawai\u2019i (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251022_251024_NorthPacific_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>), boundary layer flow from the northeast interacted with the topography of the island chain &#8212; generating vertically-propagating waves that were apparent in Mid-level (and to a lesser extent, even Upper-level) Water Vapor imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3004px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251024_0001utc_goes18_waterVapor_topography_HI_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251024_0001utc_goes18_waterVapor_topography_HI_anim.gif\" width=\"2994\" height=\"1672\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Mid-level Water Vapor (6.9 \u00b5m) image and Topography [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Northwest of the Big Island of Hawai\u2019i, there was one Pilot Report of continuous light turbulence between the altitudes of 18000-20000 ft <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251024_0001utc_goes18_waterVapor_pirep_HI.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251024_0001utc_goes18_waterVapor_pirep_HI.png\" width=\"3024\" height=\"1964\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Mid-level Water Vapor (6.9 \u00b5m) image at 0001 UTC on 24 October, with a cursor sample of a Pilot Report at 0011 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>One item of interest was the diurnal change in thermal signatures of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits &#8212; transitioning from cooler (darker shades of blue) during the nighttime at 1201 UTC to warmer (brighter shades of yellow) during the daytime at 0001 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3004px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251023_1201utc_251024_0001utc_waterVapor_HI_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/10\/251023_1201utc_251024_0001utc_waterVapor_HI_anim.gif\" width=\"2994\" height=\"1672\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Mid-level Water Vapor (6.9 \u00b5m) images at 1201 UTC on 23 October and 0001 UTC on 24 October [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Plots of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes-wf\/plot-viewer\/#\/plot-viewer\/satellite\/model\/abi18\/default\/20251024_0000Z\"><strong>Weighting Functions<\/strong><\/a> for the GOES-18 Mid-level and Upper-level Water Vapor spectral bands &#8212; derived using rawinsonde data from Hilo (PHTO) &#8212; showed the profiles of Band 08 and Band 09 weighting functions at 1200 UTC on 23 October to 0000 UTC on 24 October <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
