Visible imagery revealed low-altitude mesoscale vortices that were occasionally evident within the eye. Plots of 1-minute GOES-18 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/glm.html\"><strong>GLM<\/strong><\/a> Flash Points displayed intermittent lightning activity within the eyewall &#8212; and the coldest cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures within the eyewall were in the -80\u00baC to -85\u00baC range.<\/p>\n<p>Kiko was moving through an environment characterized by low values of <a href=\"https:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/misc\/winds\/info.winds.shr.html\"><strong>deep-layer wind shear<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, and moving over relatively <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/09\/250903_sst_Kiko.gif\"><strong>warm water<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; two factors that were favorable for tropical cyclone intensification.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1064px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> displayed a closed eyewall around the time that Kiko reached Category 4 intensity.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1062px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/09\/250903_1815utc_amsuB_microwave_Kiko.gif\" width=\"1052\" height=\"601\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">AMSU-B Microwave (183 GHz) image at 1815 UTC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A RCM-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/sarwinds_tropical.php?year=2025&amp;storm=EP112025_KIKO\"><strong>source<\/strong><\/a>) at 0301 UTC on 04 September <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> depicted a maximum wind speed of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/tropical\/2025\/EP112025_KIKO\/RCM2_SHUB_2025_09_04_03_01_19_0810270079_131.22W_14.00N_VH_C-12_MERGED01_RadialWinds_All_3.0km.png\"><strong>118.35 kts<\/strong><\/a> within the eyewall of Kiko.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3252px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a
