Strong westerly winds helped to transport a dense veil of smoke eastward. This wildfire had started on the previous day, but exhibited extreme behavior on 14 July &#8212; growing to 10000 acres, and forcing some evacuation orders to be issued.<\/p>\n<p>1-minute GOES-18 Visible images with an overlay of the <a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/goes_r_fire_surface_properties\/video\/presentation_html5.html?lms=1\"><strong>FDCA<\/strong><\/a> Fire Mask derived product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> also displayed the large thermal signature of the Cram Fire as it burned in the vicinity of the Wasco\/Jefferson County line. Data from <a href=\"https:\/\/raws.nifc.gov\"><strong>RAWS<\/strong><\/a> sites showed that winds just northeast of the fire were gusting as high as 40 mph at 2300 UTC.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 2998px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250714_goes18_visible_fireMask_OR.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250715_0100z_g18_vis_fireMask.png\" width=\"2988\" height=\"1700\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">1-minute GOES-18 Visible images with an overlay of the Fire Mask derived product, from 1401 UTC on 14 July to 0300 UTC on 15 July; highways are plotted in violet [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>An overpass of Landsat-9 provided a 30-meter resolution image of the Cram Fire at 1844 UTC on 14 July, viewed using <a href=\"https:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. The active fire front appeared as brighter shades of pink, with the burn scar exhibiting darker shades of orange-brown.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3226px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250714_1844utc_landsat9_naturalColorRGB_Cram_Fire_OR.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250714_1844utc_landsat9_naturalColorRGB_Cram_Fire_OR.png\" width=\"3216\" height=\"2112\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landsat-9 Natural Color RGB image at 1844 UTC on 14 July [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Several hours after sunset, a NOAA-20 VIIRS Day\/Night Band image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> displayed the bright nighttime glow of the Cram Fire (located between Antelope and Madras)\u00a0 &#8212; both the northern and southern flanks of the wildfire were still actively burning at that time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 2998px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250715_0916utc_n20_dnb.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250715_0916utc_n20_dnb.png\" width=\"2988\" height=\"1722\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOAA-20 (mislabeled as NPP) VIIRS Day\/Night Band image at 0916 UTC on 15 July [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 15 July Update =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 3008px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250715_g18_rgb_ngfs.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250716_g18_rgb_ngfs.png\" width=\"2998\" height=\"1782\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">5-minute GOES-18 GeoColor RGB images with an overlay of NGFS Fire Detection polygons, from 1401 UTC on 15 July to 0226 UTC on 16 July [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>After the overnight southward passage of a cold front, a transition to north-northeast winds began to transport dense wildfire smoke southwestward and southward on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20250715.html\"><strong>15 July<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; with this smoke occasionally reducing the surface visibility to 4 miles at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250715_KS33_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>Madras<\/strong><\/a> and 1.75 miles at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/07\/250715_KRDM_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>Redmond<\/strong><\/a>. The Cram Fire continued its trend of very rapid growth, burning an area over 28000 acres by late morning, increasing to over 64000 acres by the end of the day (remaining 0% contained); evacuation orders were expanded as a result. In addition, Highway 97 near Willowdale was briefly closed early in the day, due to the close proximity of the fire (and its dense smoke creating hazardous driving conditions).<\/p>\n<p>With RAWS sites surrounding the fire reporting N-NE wind gusts in the 25-30 mph range, the GOES-18 Fire Mask <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that most of the burning activity shifted to the southern flank of the Cram Fire as the day progressed.
