{"id":659,"date":"2008-05-21T23:55:41","date_gmt":"2008-05-21T23:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/659"},"modified":"2008-05-22T16:10:23","modified_gmt":"2008-05-22T16:10:23","slug":"vegetation-across-southern-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/659","title":{"rendered":"Vegetation across Southern California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/0803-05_modis_truecolor_socal_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color images (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/0803-05_modis_truecolor_socal_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color images (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MODIS true color images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"358\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A comparison of Aqua MODIS true color images from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20080305.html\" title=\"05 March 2008 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>05 March 2008<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20080517.html\" title=\"17 May 2008 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>17 May 2008<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the &#8220;browning&#8221; of vegetation across  Southern California after the Spring season rains <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/080521_90day_rainfall_ca.jpg\" title=\"90-day total rainfall\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>90-day total rainfall<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/080521_90day_percent_rainfall_ca.jpg\" title=\"90-day percent of normal rainfall\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>90-day percent of normal rainfall<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em> had ended. A significant amount of snowmelt was also evident during that period over  the southern Sierra Nevada mountains (as well as over the higher elevations of smaller ranges such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/e\/e1\/California_Topography-MEDIUM.png\" title=\"California topography\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>San Gabriel, San Bernardino, and San Jacinto Mountains<\/strong><\/a>). The images <em>(courtesy of Liam Gumley, CIMSS) <\/em>were created in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/spotlight\/google-earth.htm\" title=\"Google Earth satellite imagery from SSEC\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Google Earth<\/strong><\/a> using publicly available data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the MODIS true color images above suggested an overall dry-down of the vegetation across the region, a comparison of AWIPS images of the MODIS <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NDVI\" title=\"Normalized Difference Vegatation Index (WikiPedia)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Normalized Difference Vegetation Index<\/strong><\/a> (NDVI) and visible channel <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that many areas of southern California still exhibited a NDVI value as high as 0.5-0.6 on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20080520.html\" title=\"20 May 2008 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>20 May 2008<\/strong><\/a>.  A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=89669903\" title=\"National Public Radio story\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Public Radio story<\/strong><\/a> pointed out that the rapid growth of non-native plant species across parts of southern California could actually be a warning sign of an increased potential for future wildfire activity <em>(once that vegetation continued to dry out over the upcoming  Summer and Fall months)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/080520_modis_ndvi_vis_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS NDVI + visible image (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/080520_modis_ndvi_vis_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS NDVI + visible image (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MODIS NDVI + visible image (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"458\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A comparison of Aqua MODIS true color images from 05 March 2008 and 17 May 2008 (above) showed the &#8220;browning&#8221; of vegetation across Southern California after the Spring season rains (90-day total rainfall | 90-day percent of normal rainfall) had ended.
