GOES-19 band 13 (10.3 \u00b5m) imagery and derived stability (Lifted Index) show the development of notable instability with an alignment over North Dakota along the direction of convective movement.  One very noteworthy aspect of the cold cloud-tops in GOES-19 is their very rapid movement across central North Dakota from about 0100-0500 UTC on 21 June. SPC Watch numbers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/watch\/2025\/ww0447.html\">447<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/watch\/2025\/ww0448.html\">448<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/watch\/2025\/ww0449.html\">449<\/a> covered this system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This system caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/250620_rpts.html\">numerous tornadoes and severe wind reports<\/a> as shown below.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"582\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/06\/250620_rpts_filtered.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/06\/250620_rpts_filtered.png 582w, https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/06\/250620_rpts_filtered-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Storm Reports from the Storm Prediction Center, 1200 UTC 20 June &#8211; 1200 UTC 21 June 2025 (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">________________<\/p>\n<p>Overlapping 1-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov\/status\/satellite\/\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sectors<\/strong><\/a> provided GOES-19 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> imagery at 30-second intervals over much of the area affected by this severe convection; shown below is Infrared imagery of a large mesoscale convective system over western\/central North Dakota and a pair of supercell thunderstorms in eastern North Dakota as they eventually merged and began to move eastward across northwestern Minnesota. Pulsing overshooting tops exhibited infrared brightness temperatures in the -75 to -79\u00baC range (brighter white pixels embedded within dark black areas) &#8212; which represented a significant overshoot of the Most Unstable (MU) air parcel&#8217;s Equilibrium Level (EL), according to rawinsonde data at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/250621_0000utc_kbis_raob.png\"><strong>Bismarck ND<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/250621_0000utc_kabr_raob.png\"><strong>Aberdeen SD<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The supercell thunderstorms that developed over eastern North Dakota produced several tornadoes, including an EF3-rated tornado near Enderlin shortly after <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/G19_IR_ND_MN_SVR_20JUN2025_B13_2025172_040955_GOES-19_0001PANEL_FRAME00420.GIF\"><strong>0400 UTC<\/strong><\/a> that was responsible for 3 fatalities (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/250623_kfgf_pns.text\"><strong>NWS Grand Forks damage survey<\/strong><\/a>) **<strong>NOTE: after further investigation, Enderlin tornado #1 was upgraded from an EF-3 to an EF-5; specific details are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/media\/fgf\/Enderlin.pdf\">here<\/a>. This was the first EF5-rated tornado in the US since <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/12984\">20 May 2013 in Moore OK<\/a><\/strong>**. Hail as large as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/G19_IR_ND_MN_SVR_20JUN2025_B13_2025172_012225_GOES-19_0001PANEL_FRAME00085.GIF\"><strong>3.00&#8243; in diameter<\/strong><\/a> also was reported with these supercell thunderstorms.
