and the radiometrically-retrieved Ash Height product from the <a href=\"https:\/\/volcano.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>NOAA\/CIMSS Volcanic Cloud Monitoring<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that some of the volcanic ash reached altitudes around 16.2 km (a 1645 UTC <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/250617_1645utc_Darwin_VAAC_advisory.text\"><strong>Darwin VAAC advisory<\/strong><\/a> listed ash to altitudes of FL530 or 53000 ft).<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding Ash Loading product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that initially there were high levels of ash loading, which then decreased in time as the volcanic cloud expanded across the region.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 2046px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/250617_himawari9_Lewotobi_ash_loading.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/250617_1500z_Lewotobi_ash_loading.png\" width=\"2036\" height=\"1656\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Himawari-9 Ash Loading product [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>Himawari-9 <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/GOES_Ash_RGB-1.pdf\"><strong>Ash RGB<\/strong><\/a> images created using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/software\/geo2grid\/\"><strong>Geo2Grid<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that the volcanic cloud was composed of either primarily ash (shades of red), a mixture of ash and SO<sub>2<\/sub> (shades of yellow) or primarily SO<sub>2<\/sub> (shades of light green).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/Himawari-9_FLDK_ash_2025168_093000_2025168_210000.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/Himawari-9_AHI_FLDK_ash_2025168_150000Z.png\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Himawari-9 Ash RGB images [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/06\/Himawari-9_FLDK_ash_2025168_093000_2025168_210000.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>In a NOAA-20 VIIRS Day\/Night Band image after sunset <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, the bright nighttime glow of the summit of still-erupting Lewotobi was very apparent &#8212;
