Note the change in exhaust plume shape with time and atmospheric layer: at early altitudes of 20-50 km (where atmospheric gases within the Stratosphere had more density, and therefore higher ambient pressure), the Stage 1 Super Heavy booster plume was more linear \u2014 but after the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250527_wv4.png\"><strong>2339 UTC<\/strong><\/a> \u201chot stage separation\u201d as the Stage 2 rocket reached higher altitudes of 70-100 km (where atmospheric gases within the Mesosphere and Thermosphere were much less dense, with lower ambient pressure) the plume was able to expand outward into more of a curved \u201cboomerang\u201d shape beginning at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250527_wv6.png\"><strong>2341 UTC<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The changing shape of the exhaust plume with time (and altitude) was also apparent in 1-minute GOES-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/QuickGuide_Template_GOESRBanner_Plume_day.pdf&amp;ved=2ahUKEwja-7atnseNAxVTrYkEHejHGSEQFnoECCAQAQ&amp;usg=AOvVaw2rHEwUtSZkXtWdAn6sMgZw\"><strong>Plume RGB<\/strong><\/a> images created using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/software\/geo2grid\/\"><strong>Geo2Grid<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 2010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250527_goes19_rocketPlumeRGB_Starship_launch_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/GOES-19_ABI_RadM2_plume_day_2025147_234055Z.png\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">1-minute GOES-19 Rocket Plume RGB images, from 2335-2342 UTC on May [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250527_goes19_rocketPlumeRGB_Starship_launch_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>A display of all 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a> spectral bands from GOES-19 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that a hot thermal signature of the Starship booster was apparent in Near-Infrared &amp; Infrared bands 04-16 &#8212; especially 1 minute after launch (at 2337 UTC) near the coast.
