According to media reports, the estimated death toll from this powerful tropical cyclone ranges from 22,000 to nearly 100,000. AVHRR false color images from 01 and 02 May <em><strong>(above, <\/strong>viewed using<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/media\/spotlight\/google-earth.htm\" title=\"Google Earth imagery from SSEC\" target=\"_blank\">Google Earth<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> showed Cyclone Nargis in the Bay of Bengal, moving eastward toward Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>An animation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/real-time\/marti\/description.html\" title=\"MIMIC\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Morphed Integrated Microwave Imagery at CIMSS (MIMIC)<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed evidence of a double eyewall, suggesting that Cyclone Nargis was going through an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eyewall_replacement_cycle#Eyewall_replacement_cycles\" title=\"eyewall replacement cycle (Wikipedia)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>eyewall replacement cycle<\/strong><\/a> just prior to and near the time of landfall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/real-time\/marti\/gallery\/galleryNargis1.html\" title=\"MIMIC morphed microwave imagery (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/05\/nargis_mimic_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC morphed microwave imagery (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MIMIC morphed microwave imagery (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Category 4 intensity Cyclone Nargis made landfall across southern Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) late in the day on 02 May 2008, packing maximum winds around 135 mph (60 m s-1), producing a storm surge of 12 feet (3.6 meters), and dumping nearly 20 inches (51 cm) of rainfall.
