{"id":64799,"date":"2025-05-13T23:59:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T23:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=64799"},"modified":"2025-05-23T16:49:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T16:49:57","slug":"nopiming-provincial-park-wildfire-in-manitoba-produces-multiple-pyrocumulonimbus-clouds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/64799","title":{"rendered":"Nopiming Provincial Park Wildfire in Manitoba produces multiple pyrocumulonimbus clouds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 3258px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_g19_vis_fireMask_MB_pyroCbs.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_2004z_g19_vis.png\" width=\"3248\" height=\"1908\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">1-minute GOES-19 Red Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images with an overlay of the Fire Mask derived product, from 1501 UTC on 13 May to 0100 UTC on 14 May [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>1-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov\/status\/satellite\/\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a> GOES-19 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) with an overlay of the <a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/training_sessions\/goes_r_fire_surface_properties\/video\/presentation_html5.html?lms=1\"><strong>FDCA<\/strong><\/a> Fire Mask derived product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the large thermal anomaly associated with a wildfire in the Nopiming Provincial Park (located just west of the Manitoba\/Ontario border) as it made a rapid northeastward run of ~20 miles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20250513.html\"><strong>13 May 2025<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; and also displayed the periodic bursts of pyrocumulus clouds that began shortly after 1800 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding 1-minute GOES-19 Infrared images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that many of these pyrocumulus clouds eventually exhibited cloud-top 10.3 \u00b5m brightness temperatures of -40\u00baC (dark blue enhancement) or colder &#8212; a necessary condition to be classified as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-022-00566-8\"><strong>pyrocumulonimbus<\/strong><\/a> (pyroCb). This large wildfire generated a series of at least 8 pyroCb clouds from <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_1843utc_goes19_visible_infrared_initial_pyroCb_MB_anim.gif\"><strong>1843 UTC<\/strong><\/a> on 13 May to 0007 UTC on 14 May.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 3258px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_g19_ir_fireMask_MB_pyroCbs.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_2004z_g19_ir.png\" width=\"3248\" height=\"1908\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">1-minute GOES-19 Clean Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images with an overlay of the Fire Mask derived product, from 1501 UTC on 13 May to 0100 UTC on 14 May [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>1-minute GOES-19 GeoColor RGB images with an overlay of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/ngfs\/\"><strong>Next Generation Fire System<\/strong><\/a> (NGFS) Fire Detection polygons <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> also showed the rapid northeastward run of the Nopiming Fire during the day. In addition, to the southwest of the large Nopiming Fire a NGFS thermal signature of the smaller Lac du Bonnet Fire was apparent &#8212; that wildfire was unfortunately responsible for 2 fatalities.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 3242px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_goes19_geoColorRGB_ngfsFireDetection_MB_2.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/05\/250513_1814z_g19_geoColorRGB_ngfs_MB.png\" width=\"3232\" height=\"2080\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">1-minute GOES-19 GeoColor RGB images with an overlay of NGFS Fire Detection polygons, from 1200 UTC on 13 May to 0100 UTC on 14 May [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Toggles between VIIRS True Color RGB and False Color RGB images from Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 (as visualized using <a href=\"https:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\/s\/T3eJdf\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a>) are shown below.
