{"id":62877,"date":"2025-01-30T23:59:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-30T23:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=62877"},"modified":"2025-01-31T21:24:02","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T21:24:02","slug":"severe-thunderstorms-across-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/62877","title":{"rendered":"Severe thunderstorms across Hawai\u2019i"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 2720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_1528utc_g18_ir_Svr_Tstm_Watch.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_1528utc_g18_ir_Svr_Tstm_Watch.png\" width=\"2710\" height=\"1674\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Clean Window Infrared (10.3 \u00b5m) image at 1528 UTC, with a cursor sample of the Severe Thunderstorm Watch [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>With the increasing threat for strong to severe convection across the western portion of Hawai\u2019i, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for an area centered on the island of Kauai at 1522 UTC on 30th January 2025 <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 2720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_g18_ir_HI.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_1656z_g18_ir.png\" width=\"2710\" height=\"1674\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">5-minute GOES-18 Clean Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images, from 1106 UTC on 30th January to 0901 UTC on 31st January [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>5-minute CONUS Sector GOES-18 Clean Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed elongated clusters of convection moving eastward and northeastward across Kauai and Oahu &#8212; with embedded thunderstorms that produced heavy rain and strong winds on those two islands (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_phfo_lsr.text\"><strong>Local Storm Reports<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A corresponding animation of GOES-18 Infrared images with an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> displayed the abundant lightning activity associated with these thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 2720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_g18_ir_fed_HI.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_1656z_g18_ir_fed.png\" width=\"2710\" height=\"1674\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">5-minute GOES-18 Clean Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images with an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density, from 1106 UTC on 30th January to 0901 UTC on 31st January [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>This convection was occurring within the warm sector of a deepening Gale Force to Storm Force low pressure system (bottom left on these <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_surface_analyses_EPAC_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>) that was located NW of the island chain &#8212; and the strong SW flow in advance of this storm system (and its cold front) interacting with island terrain produced wind gusts as high as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250130_phfo_lsr_wind.text\"><strong>120 mph<\/strong><\/a> on Maui at 0850 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>The air mass within the warm sector was also unusually moist &#8212; in fact, a new daily record rainfall of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250131_phfo_rer.text\"><strong>3.57 inches<\/strong><\/a> occurred at Honolulu.
