Strong winds across that region on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20080314.html\" title=\"14 March 2008 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>14 March 2008<\/strong><\/a> <em>(gusts as high as 66 mph were reported at Ruidoso)<\/em> created a plume of blowing sand whose obvious source was White Sands. An animation of GOES-12 visible images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> shows the development of the plume during the 17:45 &#8211; 22:45 UTC <em>(11:45 AM &#8211; 4:45 PM local time)<\/em> period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/03\/080314_modis_google.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image (Google Earth)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/03\/080314_modis_google.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image (Google Earth)\" alt=\"MODIS true color image (Google Earth)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"350\" width=\"480\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A 250-meter resolution Aqua MODIS true color image from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2008_03_14_074&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em>(viewed using Google Earth<strong>, above<\/strong>)<\/em> shows greater detail of the plume at around 19:20 UTC <em>(1:20 PM local time)<\/em>. The surface visibility at Alamogordo, New Mexico <em>(station identifier KALM, located about 20 mi or 37 km east of White Sands National Monument)<\/em> was reduced to 2 miles during the late morning hours on 14 March, as winds increased and gusted to 44 mph.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/03\/080314_21z_forward_trajectories.jpg\" title=\"NOAA ARL forward trajectories\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/03\/080314_21z_forward_trajectories.jpg\" title=\"NOAA ARL forward trajectories\" alt=\"NOAA ARL forward trajectories\" align=\"middle\" height=\"610\" width=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So where did this airborne dust\/sand go? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arl.noaa.gov\/ready\/hysplit4.html\" title=\"NOAA ARL HYSPLIT\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>NOAA ARL HYSPLIT <\/strong><\/a>forward trajectories <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> suggest that lower-tropospheric air parcels originating over the White Sands area at 21:00 UTC on 14 March were transported eastward and then southeastward, reaching the extreme northwestern portion of the Gulf of Mexico on 15 March.
