Cloud-top 10.3 \u00b5m infrared brightness temperatures of that particular thunderstorm cooled to the -40 to -42\u00baC range <em>(darker shades of orange)<\/em> beginning at 0101 UTC &#8212; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/glm.html\"><strong>GLM<\/strong><\/a>-detected lightning activity began at 0108 UTC, reaching a peak at 0126 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>A plot of rawinsonde data from Oakland, California at 0000 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that air temperatures of -40 to -42\u00baC were present at a pressure level of ~300 hPa (or an altitude ~9.2 km).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250104_0000UTC_KOAK_RAOB.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2025\/01\/250104_0000UTC_KOAK_RAOB.GIF\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plot of rawinsonde data from Oakland, California at 0000 UTC on 4th January [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tornado Warning in effect through 6 PM PST, includes the cities of Shingletown, Manton and Paynes Creek with quarter size hail.
