Note the area of haziness just west-southwest of the center of the surface low &#8212; this milky\/hazy appearance was due to the enhanced diffuse reflection of sunlight off a very agitated sea surface (where high waves and abundant sea spray were present, caused by a burst of strong surface winds across that particular area).<\/p>\n<p>About an hour after the beginning of the GOES-16 Visible image animation, Metop-C ASCAT Ultra High Resolution surface winds at 1529 UTC (<a href=\"https:\/\/manati.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/datasets\/AscatCoastalUHR.php?Date=2024-11-15&amp;Zone=eastZone\"><strong>source<\/strong><\/a>) depicted a small area of wind speeds greater than 50 knots, just west of the light winds near the center of the low pressure system <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_1531utc_g16_vis_dmw.png\"><strong>1531 UTC GOES-16 image<\/strong><\/a> also showed a few GOES-16 Derived Motion Wind vectors with speeds of 51-53 knots just west of the surface low.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 931px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_1529utc_metopC_ascat_uhr_winds.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_1529utc_metopC_ascat_uhr_winds.png\" width=\"921\" height=\"779\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Metop-C ASCAT Ultra High Resolution surface winds at 1529 UTC on 15th November<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GOES-16 Visible images that included plots of GOES-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/trainings\/visit\/training_sessions\/goes_r_derived_motion_vectors\/\"><strong>Derived Motion Winds<\/strong><\/a> (DMW) within the marine boundary layer (Surface-900 hPa) are shown below &#8212; which highlighted cloud-tracked DMW speeds of 63-66 knots (72-76 mph) just south of the hazy-appearing areas of rough seas.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 2722px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_2031utc_g16_vis_dmw_63kts.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_2031utc_g16_vis_dmw_63kts.png\" width=\"2712\" height=\"1682\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Red Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) image at 2031 UTC, with a cursor sample of a marine boundary layer (Surface to 900 hPa) Derived Motion Wind vector having a speed of 63 knots [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 2722px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_2046utc_g16_vis_dmw_66kts.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241115_2046utc_g16_vis_dmw_66kts.png\" width=\"2712\" height=\"1682\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Red Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) image at 2046 UTC, with a cursor sample of a marine boundary layer (Surface to 900 hPa) Derived Motion Wind vector having a speed of 66 knots [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>The hazy-appearing area of high waves + sea spray was even more apparent in 1-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov\/status\/satellite\/\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a> GOES-16 True Color images from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:40031,33932;zoom:1.6;product:%5B%7B%22n%22:%22true_color_night%22,%22a%22:1%7D%5D;num_frames:37;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
