{"id":61744,"date":"2024-11-13T13:59:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T13:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=61744"},"modified":"2024-12-07T00:07:46","modified_gmt":"2024-12-07T00:07:46","slug":"satellite-signatures-of-a-bolide-over-the-canada-us-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/61744","title":{"rendered":"Satellite signatures of a bolide over the Canada\/US border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 2718px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241113_goes18_goes16_waterVapor_glmFlashExtentDensity_Canada_bolide.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241113_1336utc_goes18_goes16_waterVapor_glmFlashExtentDensity_Canada_bolide.png\" width=\"2708\" height=\"1680\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Upper-level Water Vapor (6.2 \u00b5m) images with an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density, from GOES-18 (left) and GOES-16 (right), 1326-1346 UTC on 13th November [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241113_goes18_goes16_waterVapor_glmFlashExtentDensity_Canada_bolide.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>5-minute PACUS\/CONUS sector Upper-level Water Vapor (6.2 \u00b5m) images with an overlay of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/glm.html\"><strong>GLM<\/strong><\/a>-detected <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GLM_Quick_Guide_Gridded_Products_June_2018.pdf\"><strong>Flash Extent Density<\/strong><\/a> from GOES-18 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> and GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the detection of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bolide#:~:text=In%20astronomy%2C%20it%20refers%20to,magnitude%20of%20%E2%88%924%20or%20brighter.\"><strong>bolide<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; which according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_view\/event\/2024\/6873\"><strong>American Meteor Society<\/strong><\/a> occurred around 1333 UTC on 13th November 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Since the bright fireball occurred at a high altitude (as a meteor was entering the Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere), there was a notable <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/webapps\/parallax\/overview.html\"><strong>parallax shift<\/strong><\/a> in the GLM-detected signatures (it should be noted that Level 3 GLM gridded products such as Flash Extent Density are not parallax-corrected) &#8212; with the apparent location over southwest Alberta as viewed from GOES-18, and over southeast British Columbia as viewed from GOES-16. With both satellites positioned over the Equator, a parallax-induced northward shift in apparent location would also need to be accounted for (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/goes18_parallax_correction.png\"><strong>GOES-18 parallax correction<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/goes16_parallax_correction.png\"><strong>GOES-16 parallax correction<\/strong><\/a>); this would bring the actual bolide location southward, to a point over far northwestern Montana (the blue fireball trajectory arrow pointing southeastward on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241113_AMS_fireball_report_map.png\"><strong>AMS map<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/goes18_parallax_correction.png\">).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Satellite viewing angle also had a small effect on the GLM Flash Extent Density magnitude (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/11\/241113_1336utc_goes18_goes16_waterVapor_glmFlashExtentDensity_Canada_bolide.png\"><strong>1336 UTC image<\/strong><\/a>) &#8212; with a peak FED value of 6.0 observed by GOES-18, compared to 4.0 observed by GOES-16.
