{"id":60844,"date":"2024-10-08T15:27:57","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T15:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=60844"},"modified":"2024-10-08T15:27:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T15:27:57","slug":"goes-19-preliminary-non-operational-abi-imagery-comparisons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/60844","title":{"rendered":"GOES-19 (Preliminary\/Non-operational) ABI Imagery Comparisons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/satellites\">NOAA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/goddard\">NASA<\/a> recently released the first <a href=\"http:\/\/nwafiles.nwas.org\/jom\/articles\/2018\/2018-JOM4\/2018-JOM4.pdf\">ABI<\/a> (Advanced Baseline Imager) imagery from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/news\/noaa-debuts-first-imagery-goes-19\">GOES-19<\/a>. GOES-T was launched on June 25, 2024. See the GOES-U launch as <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/60087\">the other GOES ABI monitored the rocket signature with rapid scan imagery)<\/a>, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/60173\">re-entry<\/a>. GOES-19 is the final (fourth) in the GOES-R series and is currently located above the equator at approximately 90W. GOES-19 is slated to become NOAA&#8217;s operational GOES-East in spring 2025 after going through extensive post-launch testing. Of course, due to <a href=\"https:\/\/glossary.ametsoc.org\/wiki\/Parallax\">parallax<\/a> and other reasons, there are expected to be differences, especially at larger view angles. The above loop as a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/10\/16P_G16_G18_G19_4x4_remapped_2024280_slower.mp4\">mp4<\/a>. Or versions that toggle between GOES-19 and GOES-16 only (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/10\/16P_G19_G16_G18_4x4_remapped_2024280_slower.mp4\">mp4<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes-r\/abi-\/static_and_timediff_imagery.html\">16-panel imagery <\/a>(from GOES-16, GOES-18 and GOES-19), including time difference images (which can be very useful in assessing image quality). The instrument response functions can be found both on  <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/calibration\/\">CIMSS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ncc.nesdis.noaa.gov\/GOESR\/ABI.php\">Calibration Working Group<\/a> sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar page showing ABI comparisons, but from <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/46087\">GOES-18<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">H\/T<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the many (thousands) who made the GOES-19 ABI possible. These are GOES-19 ABI are early images (preliminary and non-operational, future calibration improvements are possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/software\/geo2grid\/\">geo2grid<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/mcidas\/software\/x\/\">McIDAS-X<\/a> software was used in generating these images.
