LightningCast probabilities (the probability that a GLM observation will occur within the next 60 minutes) start to ramp up shortly after 1800 UTC, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/07\/G16DCPD_LtgCast_GLMFED-20240716_182617.png\">a 10% contour appears at 1826 UTC (in Rock County over southern Wisconsin)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/07\/G16DCPD_LtgCast_GLMFED-20240716_185117.png\">a 50% contour at 1851 UTC<\/a>.  The first GLM observation <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/07\/G16DCPD_LtgCast_GLMFED-20240716_191117.png\">occurred between 1906 and 1911 UTC<\/a>, meaning a lead time of more than 20 minutes from the appearance of the 50% contour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nexrad reflectivity for this time (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aos.wisc.edu\/weather\/wx_obs\/Nexrad.html\">downloaded from this site<\/a>) is shown below.  Note in particular that radar echoes did not occur until around 1806 UTC (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/07\/swi3comp1801_1806toggle16July2024.gif\">here&#8217;s a toggle showing the radar at 1801 and 1806<\/a>) &#8212; but LightningCast values started to increase around 1751 UTC.  LightningCast is suggesting something might happen before a signal appears on radar.   The interaction between the east-west line of convection over southern Wisconsins and the lake breeze front propagating inland also deserves mention!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/07\/swi3_radar_anim1700to1854_16July2024.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60339\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">NEXRAD Reflectivity 1700-1854 UTC on 16 July 2024 (click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LightningCast Probabilities are available at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/severe_conv\/pltg.html\">this RealEarth instance<\/a>.  One of the features at that site is the Aviation Lightning Dashboard, available at all airports within the USA (and some outside of the USA).
