{"id":6020,"date":"2010-07-12T23:22:33","date_gmt":"2010-07-12T23:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=6020"},"modified":"2015-01-30T16:56:13","modified_gmt":"2015-01-30T16:56:13","slug":"water-vapor-channel-weighting-functions-helping-to-explain-the-complexity-of-water-vapor-image-interpretation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/6020","title":{"rendered":"Water Vapor channel &#8220;weighting functions&#8221;: helping to explain the complexity of water vapor image interpretation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/US_Sndr_WV_6.5u_Sat_20100711_2346.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor channels (00 UTC, 12 July)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/US_Sndr_WV_6.5u_Sat_20100711_2346.png\" alt=\"GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor channels (00 UTC, 12 July)\" width=\"480\" height=\"460\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor channels (00 UTC, 12 July)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An AWIPS 4-panel display of the three GOES-13 <a title=\"GOES Sounder instrument\" href=\"http:\/\/noaasis.noaa.gov\/NOAASIS\/ml\/sounder.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sounder<\/strong><\/a> water vapor channel images along with the single GOES-13 <a title=\"GOES Imager instrument\" href=\"http:\/\/noaasis.noaa.gov\/NOAASIS\/imager.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Imager<\/strong><\/a> water vapor channel image <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that a pocket of warm brightness temperatures <em>(denoting dryer air aloft)<\/em> was in place over much of eastern Virginia and North Carolina around 00 UTC on <a title=\"12 July 2010 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20100712.html\"><strong>12 July 2010<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding plots of the GOES-13 Sounder <em>(red, green, and blue plots)<\/em> and GOES-13 Imager <em>(black plot)<\/em> water vapor channel <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/wf\/index.php\">weighting functions<\/a><\/strong> <em><strong>(below, calculated using 00 <a title=\"00 UTC Greensboro NC rawinsonde data\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/KGSO_20100712_0000.png\" target=\"_blank\">UTC rawinsonde data<\/a> from Greensboro, North Carolina<\/strong><\/em>) showed a relatively uncommon &#8220;bi-modal&#8221; structure &#8212; this indicated that there were significant contributions from two distinct layers, such that the actual altitude of the features being displayed on the water vapor imagery over that region at that time would be difficult to ascertain.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/100712_00z_kgso_wv_wf.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"   \" title=\"Greensboro NC GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor weighting function plots\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/100712_00z_kgso_wv_wf.jpg\" alt=\"Greensboro NC GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor weighting function plots\" width=\"480\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greensboro NC GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor weighting function plots<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, 12 hours later, the same AWIPS 4-panel display of water vapor imagery around 12 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that significant amounts of moisture and cloudiness had moved into the region that was relatively dry at 00 UTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/US_Sndr_WV_6.5u_Sat_20100712_1146.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor channels (12 UTC, 12 July)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/US_Sndr_WV_6.5u_Sat_20100712_1146.png\" alt=\"GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor channels (12 UTC, 12 July)\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor channels (12 UTC, 12 July)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the increased middle and upper tropospheric moisture, note that the 12 UTC\u00a0 water vapor weighting function plots <em><strong>(below, calculated using <a title=\"12 UTC rawinsonde data from Grteensboro NC\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/KGSO_20100712_1200.png\" target=\"_blank\">12 UTC rawinsonde data<\/a> from Greensboro NC)<\/strong><\/em> all peaked at significantly higher altitudes &#8212; and by the shape of the weighting function plots, it was easier to tell the layer of the troposphere that was being sampled by each of the individual water vapor channels.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/100712_12z_kgso_wv_wf.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"Greensboro NC GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor weighting function plots\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/100712_12z_kgso_wv_wf.jpg\" alt=\"Greensboro NC GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor weighting function plots\" width=\"480\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greensboro NC GOES-13 Sounder and Imager water vapor weighting function plots<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS images of the Blended Total Precipitable Water product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> confirmed that there was a significant increase in total column moisture content over the Greensboro NC region during that 12-hour period.
