The GOES-18 3.9 \u00b5m Shortwave Infrared brightness temperature exhibited by the northernmost South Fork Fire first reached 137.88\u00baC (the saturation temperature of GOES-18 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Band 7 detectors) at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/06\/240617_2012utc_goes18_4panel_band07_137.88C.png\"><strong>2012 UTC<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; and that fire continually exhibited the 137.88\u00baC saturation temperature for about 5.5 hours (ending at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/06\/240618_0140utc_goes18_4panel_Band07_137.88C.png\"><strong>0140 UTC<\/strong><\/a>). The 2 wildfires caused evacuations to be ordered for much of Ruidoso community.<\/p>\n<p>1-minute GOES-18 True Color RGB images (<a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:0,0;satellite:goeswest;num_frames:37;\"><strong>source<\/strong><\/a>) on 17 June<strong><em>\u00a0(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed the transport of dense smoke from the wildfires. Note the occasional brighter-white pyrocumulus jumps near the fire source region.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1418px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/06\/goeswest_abi_radm2_true_color_night_s20240617190056_e20240618013456_f395.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/06\/goeswest_abi_radm2_true_color_night_20240617234056.png\" width=\"1408\" height=\"638\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">1-minute GOES-18 True Color RGB images, from 1900 UTC on 17 June to 0134 UTC on 18 June [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>A Suomi-NPP VIIRS Day\/Night Band image valid at 0809 UTC (2:09 AM local time) on 18 June <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> displayed the bright nighttime glow of the 2 wildfires near Ruidoso &#8212; with the combined smoke plume extending to the northeast and fanning out across the Texas Panhandle.
