Snowfall amounts in the state of Alabama <em>(which fell on the previous day)<\/em>  were as high as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nohrsc.nws.gov\/interactive\/html\/map.html?mode=query&amp;zoom=&amp;center_x=++-86.446&amp;center_y=++32.801&amp;ql=station&amp;var=snowfall_obs_24_h&amp;dy=2008&amp;dm=1&amp;dd=20&amp;dh=12&amp;snap=1&amp;o11=1&amp;o9=1&amp;o12=1&amp;lbl=l&amp;o13=1&amp;min_x=-87.383749999991&amp;min_y=31.863334019974&amp;max_x=-85.508749999992&amp;max_y=33.738334019974&amp;coord_x=-86.4462499999915&amp;coord_y=32.800834019974&amp;zbox_n=&amp;zbox_s=&amp;zbox_e=&amp;zbox_w=&amp;metric=0&amp;bgvar=dem&amp;width=1000&amp;height=1000&amp;nw=1000&amp;nh=1000&amp;type=0&amp;js=1&amp;uc=0\" title=\"NOHRSC snowfall reports\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>5.8 inches near Verbena<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/bmx\/pns\/index.php?yr=2008&amp;mo=01&amp;dy=19\" title=\"NWS Birmingham snowfall reports\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>5.0 inches at Orrville<\/strong><\/a>, and 4.0 inches at Toxley <em>(located on the MODIS imagery <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-google-earth\/t1.08020\/t1.08020.kml\" title=\"MODIS image in Google Earth\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>using Google Earth<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>below<\/strong>);<\/em> snowfall up to 3.0 inches was reported in Mississippi, with 1.5 inches falling in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/080120_modis_google_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS imagery in Google Earth (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/080120_modis_google_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS imagery in Google Earth (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MODIS imagery in Google Earth (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"298\" width=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of the MODIS visible channel, the 1.6\u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;snow\/ice channel&#8221;, and the Land Surface Temperature product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> confirmed that this feature was indeed snow cover <em>(snow is a strong absorber at the 1.6\u00c2\u00b5m wavelength, and appears darker on the &#8220;snow\/ice channel&#8221; image);<\/em> in addition, the land surface temperatures within the area of snow cover were generally several  degrees F colder <em>(upper 20s to low 30s F, darker green enhancement)<\/em> compared to the surrounding areas with bare ground <em>(where land surface temperatures were generally in the mid 30s to around 40 F)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/080120_modis_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS visible + snow\/ice + land surface temperature images (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/080120_modis_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS visible + snow\/ice + land surface temperature images (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MODIS visible + snow\/ice + land surface temperature images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"463\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Terra MODIS true color image from the SSEC MODIS Today site (above) revealed a swath of fresh snow cover across parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia on 20 January 2008.
