Of particular interest in the water vapor imagery is the appearance of well-defined satellite signatures of an initial <strong>warm conveyor belt (WCB1)<\/strong>, with a <strong>secondary warm conveyor belt (WCB2)<\/strong> later forming; a <strong>cold conveyor belt (CCB)<\/strong> is also seen emerging from beneath the secondary warm conveyor belt (as shown on the annotated image below). The &#8220;conveyor belt model&#8221; was developed and refined (most recently by authors such as <a title=\"Browning journal article\" href=\"http:\/\/ams.allenpress.com\/perlserv\/?request=res-loc&amp;uri=urn%3Aap%3Apdf%3Adoi%3A10.1175%2F1520-0434%281986%29001%3C0023%3ACMOPS%3E2.0.CO%3B2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Browning<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"Carlson textbook\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2lIVAAAAIAAJ&amp;pg=PA316&amp;lpg=PA316&amp;dq=carlson+conveyor+belt&amp;source=web&amp;ots=zS_sD6LR2o&amp;sig=RIBooVJpURgZuTmduDesTxgvi0o#PPP1,M1\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Carlson<\/strong><\/a>, and <a title=\"Young journal article\" href=\"http:\/\/journals.cambridge.org\/production\/action\/cjoGetFulltext?fulltextid=48050\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Young<\/strong><\/a>) to help visualize the airflow through mid-latitude cyclones (<a title=\"conveyor belts (schematic 1)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/conveyor_belts_schematic_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>schematic 1<\/strong><\/a> | <a title=\"conveyor belts (schematic 2)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/conveyor_belts_schematic_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>schematic 2<\/strong><\/a>); the flow is ascending in all 3 conveyor belts <em>(producing the enhanced moisture and cloud signatures seen on the water vapor imagery),<\/em> but the air rises to higher altitudes in the two warm conveyors than in the cold conveyor.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"conveyor belts\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/conveyor_belts.070.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"conveyor belts\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/conveyor_belts.070.png\" alt=\"conveyor belts\" width=\"479\" height=\"360\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of the GOES-11 water vapor channel at 3-hour intervals <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> show that during the following 2-3 days this cyclone rapidly occluded, became quasi-stationary, and then eventually transitioned to a &#8220;cut-off low&#8221; which began to slowly retrograde to the northwest on 15-16 January.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"GOES-11 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/13-16jan2008_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-11 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/01\/13-16jan2008_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-11 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" width=\"484\" height=\"365\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An animation of GOES-11 6.7 \u00b5m &#8220;water vapor channel&#8221; imagery (above) shows the development and intensification of a mid-latitude cyclone over the eastern North Pacific Ocean on 13 January 2008.
