This dust reduced surface visibility to 1-1\/4 mi at some sites as it made its way south across Interstates I-20 and I-10. In this particular case, the Ash RGB provided a better depiction of the blowing dust than the <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Dust_RGB_Quick_Guide-1.pdf\"><strong>Dust RGB<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; for example, at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/240517_0001utc_goes16_ashRGB_dustRGB_TX_anim.gif\"><strong>0001 UTC<\/strong><\/a> (both RGBs use the same spectral bands, but are scaled differently).<\/p>\n<p>GOES-16 True Color RGB images from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:0,0;satellite:goeseast;num_frames:40;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> provided a clearer view of the areal coverage of this blowing dust.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1406px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/goeseast_abi_radc_true_color_night_s20240516210117_e20240517010117_f49.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/goeseast_abi_radc_true_color_night_20240516235617.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1396\" height=\"629\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 True Color RGB images [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>5-minute CONUS Sector GOES-16 (GOES-East) Ash RGB images (above) showed a pulse of blowing dust &#8212; lofted by thunderstorm outflow winds gusting as high as 70 kt (81 mph) &#8212; that was moving southward across West Texas late in the day on 16 May 2024.
