{"id":5924,"date":"2010-06-28T14:21:38","date_gmt":"2010-06-28T14:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=5924"},"modified":"2010-06-28T22:03:43","modified_gmt":"2010-06-28T22:03:43","slug":"tropical-storm-alex-in-the-bay-of-campeche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/5924","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Alex in the Bay of Campeche"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/ALEX.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5937\" title=\"ALEX\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/ALEX.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Alex, which formed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea out of a westward-moving tropical wave on Friday and Saturday, emerged overnight into the Bay of Campeche from the Yucatan Peninsula.  Since emerging from that landmass as a tropical depression (signifying sustained winds weaker than 35 knots), it has strengthened back to Tropical Storm status.  Current forecasts place it as a hurricane &#8212; possibly major &#8212; near the northern Mexico Gulf Coast later this week.<\/p>\n<p>The large-scale environment is favorable for strengthening.  For example, the <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/real-time\/tpw2\/global\/main.html\">MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/a> loop (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/Alex_MIMIC_TPWloop.gif\">here<\/a>) shows an environment that is rich in moisture over the Gulf of Mexico.  (Note also the apparent Fujiwara interaction between Alex and Pacific Tropical Depression Darby, as they start to circulate around a common center.)  The general west-northwestward drift of the feature is also readily apparent, as are the tropical systems Celia and Darby in the Pacific Ocean.  The projected path of the storm takes it over <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/Alex_SST.gif\">warm sea surface temperatures<\/a> with abundant <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/Alex_OHC.gif\">Oceanic Heat Content<\/a>.  In addition, the environment is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/wg8shr.gif\">low shear<\/a> that is <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/wg8sht.gif\">decreasing with time<\/a>.  (Images of these products are available at the <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\">CIMSS Tropical Cyclone Web page<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/AVHRR_IR_WIN_20100628_1216.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5935\" title=\"AVHRR_IR_WIN_20100628_1216\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/AVHRR_IR_WIN_20100628_1216.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>10.8-micron imagery from the AVHRR on NOAA-15 on the morning of 28 June (above) shows Brightness temperatures around -80 C in the strong convection around the center of Alex.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/MODIS_IR_20100628_1853.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/MODIS_IR_20100628_1853.png\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR imagery <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed cloud top IR brightness temperatures as cold as -92\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(darkest purple color enhancement) <\/em>associated with some of the intense convection\u00c2\u00a0 around Alex at 18:53 UTC.
