driven by NW winds gusting as high as 34 kt (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/240510_CYYE_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>CYYE surface reports<\/strong><\/a>) behind a fast-moving cold front (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/240510_Canada_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/bc_viirs_swir-20240511_095042.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/bc_viirs_swir-20240511_095042.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi-NPP VIIRS Shortwave Infrared (3.74 \u00b5m) image valid at 0957 UTC on 11 May [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After sunrise on 11 May, GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> True Color RGB images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the hazy gray-to-tan signature of widespread smoke from the British Columbia (and Prairie Province) wildfires &#8212; some of which became entrained into the circulation of a low pressure system in the Northwest Territories, with other plumes being transported as far east as Hudson Bay and as far south as North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1406px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/goeseast_abi_radf_true_color_night_s20240511113020_e20240512000020_f76.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/05\/goeseast_abi_radf_true_color_night_20240511161020.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1396\" height=\"629\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 daytime True Color + Nighttime Microphysics RGB images, from 1130 UTC on 11 May to 0000 UTC on 12 May [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Note that the hazy signature of wildfire smoke was quite pronounced (in GOES-16 True Color RGB imagery) over southern Wisconsin by the end of the day on 11 May &#8212;
