Madison, Wisconsin <em>(located at the center of the images)<\/em> experienced its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/crnews\/display_story.php?wfo=mkx&amp;storyid=11855&amp;source=0\" title=\"Top 10 Snowiest Decembers\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>second snowiest December on record<\/strong><\/a>, with <strong>33.5 inches<\/strong> falling during the month. The maximum snow depth at the Madison airport was 12 inches (on both 12 and 16 December), but NWS Cooperative Observers in the Madison metro area reported snow depths as high as 16 inches; across southern Wisconsin, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soils.wisc.edu\/wimnext\/opu\/data\/opu2007351\" title=\"17 December 2007 snow depth reports\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>maximum snow depth of 22 inches<\/strong><\/a> was reported at Germantown and Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>While the official temperature at the Madison airport did get as low as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soils.wisc.edu\/wimnext\/opu\/data\/opu2007340\" title=\"06 December 2007 temperature reports\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>-10\u00c2\u00baF<\/strong><\/a> on 06 December, the month as a whole was only <strong>1.8\u00c2\u00baF<\/strong> below normal (average temperature: <strong>21.2\u00c2\u00baF<\/strong>); as a result, the lakes in the Madison area froze within about a week of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos.wisc.edu\/~sco\/lakes\/msnicesum.html\" title=\"Madison lakes ice data\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>median freeze dates<\/strong><\/a>. The images above show that several of the more shallow lakes southeast of  Madison  were the first to freeze, with the largest of the Madison lakes <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Mendota\" title=\"Lake Mendota (Wikipedia)\" target=\"_blank\">(<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Mendota\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Lake Mendota (Wikipedia)\"><strong>Lake Mendota<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Mendota\" title=\"Lake Mendota (Wikipedia)\" target=\"_blank\">)<\/a>  appearing totally frozen and white with deep snow cover on the final <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/12\/080102_modis_msn.jpg\" title=\"02 January 2007 MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>02 January 2008 true color image<\/strong><\/a>.
