Note the darker appearance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/12\/avhrr_67.jpg\" title=\"Chicago and Milwaukee metro areas\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chicago IL and Milwaukee WI metro areas<\/strong><\/a>; even though those cities had  a significant amount of snow on the ground, the higher concentration of trees, buildings, and paved surfaces all contributed to a somewhat &#8220;darker&#8221; satellite scene in those urban areas (compared to the adjacent outlying rural areas). Also evident on the AVHRR image were well-defined lake-effect snow bands over Lake Michigan that were moving inland over portions of Michigan and Indiana &#8212; these snow bands were on the far western periphery of a large winter storm that was centered over the Northeast US.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/12\/modis_google.jpg\" title=\"MODIS Google Earth imagery\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/12\/modis_google.jpg\" title=\"MODIS Google Earth imagery\" alt=\"MODIS Google Earth imagery\" align=\"middle\" height=\"374\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MODIS &#8220;true color&#8221; imagery from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/\" title=\"MODIS Today site\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed a large number of lake-effect snow (LES) bands over parts of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron as cold arctic air streamed southward across the Great Lakes on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20071214.html\" title=\"14 December 2007 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>14 December 2007<\/strong><\/a>; these LES bands produced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nohrsc.nws.gov\/interactive\/html\/map.html?mode=pan&amp;zoom=&amp;center_x=++-91.371&amp;center_y=+++49.303&amp;ql=station&amp;var=snowfall_obs_24_h&amp;dy=2007&amp;dm=12&amp;dd=15&amp;dh=0&amp;snap=1&amp;o9=1&amp;o12=1&amp;o13=1&amp;lbl=m&amp;min_x=-91.400416666658&amp;min_y=42.00500068664&amp;max_x=-83.167083333325&amp;max_y=50.238334019973&amp;coord_x=-87.2837499999915&amp;coord_y=46.121667353306506&amp;zbox_n=&amp;zbox_s=&amp;zbox_e=&amp;zbox_w=&amp;metric=0&amp;bgvar=dem&amp;width=1000&amp;height=1000&amp;nw=1000&amp;nh=1000&amp;type=0&amp;js=1&amp;uc=0\" title=\"snowfall amounts\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>3-6 inches of snowfall<\/strong><\/a> at some locations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
