Note that a thunderstorm was reported at Menado (station identifier <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/04\/240417_WAMM_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>WAMM<\/strong><\/a>) from 1400-1430 UTC, due to abundant <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/COweatherman\/status\/1780584128443797634\"><strong>lightning activity<\/strong><\/a> within the dense volcanic umbrella cloud.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/04\/HIM09_IR_RUANG_17APR2024_B13_2024108_124000_0001PANEL_FRAME00010.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/04\/HIM09_IR_RUANG_17APR2024_B13_2024108_124000_0001PANEL_FRAME00010.GIF\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Himawari-9 Infrared Window (10.4 \u00b5m) image at 1240 UTC on 17 April [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the Himawari-9 Infrared Window (10.4 \u00b5m) image at 1240 UTC <strong>(above)<\/strong>, the coldest pixel exhibited a brightness temperature of -88.8\u00baC (dark purple enhancement) &#8212; with an adjacent warm pixel of -46.4\u00baC (green enhancement), possibly a result of compensating subsidence immediately downwind of the robust updraft (which penetrated the local tropopause and extended into the lower stratosphere).<\/p>\n<p>Maximum radiometrically retrieved <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2024\/04\/240417_1600utc_himawari9_ashHeight.png\"><strong>Ash Height<\/strong><\/a> values (<a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>source<\/strong><\/a>) reached 16-18 km.
