{"id":5801,"date":"2010-06-01T18:01:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-01T18:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=5801"},"modified":"2010-06-03T17:00:35","modified_gmt":"2010-06-03T17:00:35","slug":"goes-13-placed-into-super-rapid-scan-operations-due-to-a-radar-outage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/5801","title":{"rendered":"Puerto Rico: GOES-13 Super Rapid Scan Operations, and Saharan dust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/100601_g13_ir4_srso_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/100601_g13_ir4_srso_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Due to lightning causing a radar outage, and with strong thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall in the area, the National Weather Service Forecast Office in <a title=\"NWS San Juan Puerto Rico\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/sju\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>San Juan, Puerto Rico<\/strong><\/a> requested that GOES-13 be placed into Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) mode &#8212; this made satellite imagery available at 1-minute intervals for short periods of time between 02:04 and 04:15 UTC on <a title=\"01 June 2010 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20100601.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>01 June 2010<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre><strong><a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=AREA%20FORECAST%20DISCUSSION\">AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION<\/a>...UPDATED\r\nNATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR\r\n826 PM AST MON MAY 31 2010\r\n\r\n.UPDATE...<a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=TDWR\">TDWR<\/a> TSJU <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=RADAR\">RADAR<\/a> HAS FAILED <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=LIKELY\">LIKELY<\/a> DUE TO COMMS FAILURE\r\nAS A RESULT OF INTENSE <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=CG\">CG<\/a> <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=LIGHTNING\">LIGHTNING<\/a> ACTIVITY NEAR THE <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=RADAR\">RADAR<\/a> SITE.\r\nGIVEN THAT WE HAVE NO RADARS AVAILABLE <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=ATTM\">ATTM<\/a>...I HAVE REQUESTED TO\r\n<a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=NCEP\">NCEP<\/a> TO PUT <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=GOES\">GOES<\/a> IN SUPER RAPID SCAN IMAGERY UNTIL AT LEAST\r\nMIDNIGHT WHEN <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=CONVECTION\">CONVECTION<\/a> SHOULD WEAKEN OR WITH START SEEING A\r\nDECREASE IN <a onclick=\"return popup(this, 'notes')\" href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/glossary.php?word=LIGHTNING\">LIGHTNING<\/a> DATA.<\/strong>\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>McIDAS images of the GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the widespread cold cloud tops in the vicinity of Puerto Rico during that period &#8212; IR brightness temperatures south of the island were as cold as<strong> -82\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(purple color enhancement)<\/em>. While the convective complex approaching from the north appeared to be diminishing &#8212; an important trend to monitor nonetheless &#8212; there was a small cell that later developed very quickly along the extreme eastern end of the island.<\/p>\n<p>Since we&#8217;re talking about Puerto Rico, it&#8217;s also worth mentioning that   there had been a large cloud of Saharan dust\u00c2\u00a0 moving westward  across the  tropical Atlantic Ocean during the past few days of May  2010, and the  leading edge of this Saharan dust was approaching the  Lesser Antilles  island chain on 01 June. The large hazy areas of  Saharan dust were very  apparent on GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-12 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel  images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, and getting closer to Puerto Rico <em>(labeled  <strong>PR<\/strong> on the images)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/100601_G12_G13_VIS_DUST_PR.GIF\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-12 (bottom) and GOES-13 (top) visible channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/06\/100601_G12_G13_VIS_DUST_PR.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-12 (bottom) and GOES-13 (top) visible channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 (bottom) and GOES-13 (top) visible channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The dry air mass containing this Saharan dust could also be seen on GOES-12 sounder\u00c2\u00a0 Total Precipitable Water (TPW) derived product imagery <em><strong>(below),<\/strong><\/em> with TPW values in the 30-40 mm range <em>(green to yellow color enhancement)<\/em>.
