This was Day 34 following the deadly explosion on the offshore oil rig <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?s=Deepwater+Horizon\">Deepwater Horizon<\/a><\/strong>, and the damaged underwater wellhead continued to discharge more than 5,000 barrels of oil per day.<\/p>\n<p>A day later, MODIS true color and false color images from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20100525.html\"><strong>25 May 2010<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> continued to exhibit a distinct signature of the surface  oil slick.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100525_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color (using Bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (using bands 7\/2\/1) images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100525_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS true color (using Bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (using bands 7\/2\/1) images\" width=\"480\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color (using Bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (using bands 7\/2\/1) images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A comparison of 250-meter resolution MODIS Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) true color (using Bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (using Bands 7\/2\/1) images from the SSEC MODIS Today site (above) showed the main portion of the surface oil slick in the northern Gulf of Mexico on 24 May 2010.
