An AWIPS 4-panel image showing the MODIS and GOES-12<br \/>\n  visible and IR window channels <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated<br \/>\n  the better wave detection capabilities of the higher spatial resolution MODIS<br \/>\n  data. The GOES-12 and MODIS IR brightness temperatures in the region of the<br \/>\n  wave signatures were generally in the +1\u00c2\u00baC to +5\u00c2\u00baC range, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/NA_GOES_Sounder_DPI_CTH_20071120_1900.png\" title=\"GOES Sounder Cloud Top Height product\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GOES<br \/>\n  Sounder Cloud Top Height<\/strong><\/a> indicating tops around 4700 feet in that<br \/>\n  area <em>(tan enhancement)<\/em>; the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/MODIS_CPI_20071120_1703.png\" title=\"MODIS Cloud Phase product\"><strong>MODIS<br \/>\n  Cloud Phase product<\/strong><\/a> confirmed that the cloud in that region was<br \/>\n  likely composed of supercooled water droplets <em>(blue enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/MODIS_4PANEL_20071120_1703.png\" title=\"MODIS and GOES visible + IR images\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/MODIS_4PANEL_20071120_1703.png\" title=\"MODIS and GOES visible + IR images\" alt=\"MODIS and GOES visible + IR images\" align=\"middle\" height=\"458\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>=============================================<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/Reg_Vis_Sat_20071120_2045.png\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image + NAM 850mb isotherms\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/Reg_Vis_Sat_20071120_2045.png\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image + NAM 850mb isotherms\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible image + NAM 850mb isotherms\" align=\"middle\" height=\"471\" width=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Much of the wave structure on satellite imagery seemed to be located along<br \/>\n  a southwest-to-northeast oriented <strong>baroclinic zone<\/strong> <em>(indicated<br \/>\n  by a tighter packing of the 850 mb isotherms)<\/em>, with the individual banding<br \/>\n  elements oriented generally <em>perpendicular<\/em> to the axis of the baroclinic<br \/>\n  zone <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>; however, radar echoes that developed<br \/>\n  a few hours later were generally aligned closer with the axis of the baroclinic<br \/>\n  zone <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. A northwest-to-southeast cross section<br \/>\n  of NAM12 model output <strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/Reg_Vis_Sat_20071120_2045_xsec.png\" title=\"cross section line D-D'\" target=\"_blank\">along<br \/>\n  line D-D&#8217;<\/a> orthogonal to the baroclinic zone axis)<\/strong> revealed elevated<br \/>\n  pockets of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/NAM12_lineD__2-D_Frontogenesis-Mag_Fn_Img_20071120_2100F003.png\" title=\"model cross section (frontogenesis)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>frontogenesis<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/NAM12_lineD__Omega_20071120_2100F003.png\" title=\"model cross section (omega)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>omega<\/strong><\/a> <em>(within<br \/>\n  the 600-850 mb layer)<\/em> which may have played a role in the formation of<br \/>\n  the regions of banding seen on both satellite imagery and radar reflectivity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/NAM12_850MB_Temperature_20071120_2100F003.png\" title=\"Radar reflectivity + NAM 850mb isotherms\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/NAM12_850MB_Temperature_20071120_2100F003.png\" title=\"Radar reflectivity + NAM 850mb isotherms\" alt=\"Radar reflectivity + NAM 850mb isotherms\" align=\"middle\" height=\"467\" width=\"489\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>=============================================<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071120_modis_truecolor_ia_waves.jpg\" title=\"MODIS 250m resolution true color image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071120_modis_truecolor_ia_waves.jpg\" title=\"MODIS 250m resolution true color image\" alt=\"MODIS 250m resolution true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"320\" width=\"491\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A 250-m resolution MODIS true color image <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> from<br \/>\n  the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSEC<br \/>\n  MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site shows the cloud top waves in great detail over<br \/>\n  northeastern Iowa.
