{"id":569,"date":"2007-11-11T02:30:39","date_gmt":"2007-11-11T02:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/569"},"modified":"2008-08-13T15:40:47","modified_gmt":"2008-08-13T15:40:47","slug":"saharan-dust-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/569","title":{"rendered":"Saharan dust outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071110_met8_split_anim.gif\" title=\"Meteosat-9 Saharan Air Layer tracking product (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071110_met8_split_anim.gif\" title=\"METEOSAT-9 Saharan Air Layer tracking product (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"METEOSAT-9 Saharan Air Layer tracking product (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"189\" width=\"482\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A major outbreak of Saharan dust was noted during the 06-11 November 2007 period &#8212; the <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\/real-time\/salmain.php?&#038;prod=splitE&#038;time\" title=\"METEOSAT-9 Saharan Air Layer tracking product\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Meteosat-9 Saharan Air Layer (SAL)<\/strong><\/a> tracking product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed an extensive signal of thick dust <em>(orange to red enhancement)<\/em> that was being transported westward across the tropical Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic\/real-time\/tpw2\/global\/main.html\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (TPW)\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (TPW)<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the dry character of this large Saharan dust plume &#8212; TPW values as low as 10-20 mm <em>(brown to violet enhancement)<\/em> were seen over eastern and central portions of the tropical Atlantic basin as the dust and dry air layer streamed westward off the African continent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071110_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071110_mimic_tpw_anim.gif\" title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"235\" width=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An animation of daytime <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/tropic2\/misc\/sal\/info.sal.trucol.html\" title=\"Meteosat-9 true color images\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Meteosat-9 &#8220;true color&#8221; image composites<\/strong><\/a>  at 12 UTC and\/or 18 UTC<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> shows the hazy appearance of the large Saharan dust plume. The appearance of such a strong Saharan dust event in November is curious in light of two recent  studies by Evan et al.: (1) <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/clavr\/amato\/dust_record\/index.htm\" title=\"November minimum of seasonal dust cycle\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>November appears to be the minimum of the seasonal Saharan dust cycle<\/strong><\/a>, and (2) <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/clavr\/amato\/News\/2007_dust.htm\" title=\"August-Spetember 2007 dust activity\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>August-September 2007 showed little to no dust storm activity<\/strong><\/a> over the tropical North Atlantic basin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071111_met8_truecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"METEOSAT-9 true color imagery (Animated GIF)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071111_met8_truecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"Meteosat-9 true color imagery (Animated GIF)\" alt=\"Meteosat-9 true color imagery (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"194\" width=\"486\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A major outbreak of Saharan dust was noted during the 06-11 November 2007 period &#8212; the Meteosat-9 Saharan Air Layer (SAL) tracking product (above) revealed an extensive signal of thick dust (orange to red enhancement) that was being transported westward across the tropical Atlantic.
