{"id":568,"date":"2007-11-03T23:38:50","date_gmt":"2007-11-03T23:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/11\/03\/noel-transitions-to-an-extratropical-storm\/"},"modified":"2008-08-13T15:41:23","modified_gmt":"2008-08-13T15:41:23","slug":"noel-transitions-to-an-extratropical-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/568","title":{"rendered":"Noel transitions to an extratropical cyclone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071103_noel_goes12_wv_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor images (Animated GIF)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071103_noel_goes12_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"479\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Hurricane Noel made the transition to an extratropical cyclone during the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20071102.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"02 November 2007 daily weather map\"><strong>02<\/strong><\/a> to <strong>03 November 2007<\/strong> period, it remained a very large and very powerful storm system that significantly impacted the Atlantic coast regions of the northeastern US and southeastern Canada with hurricane force winds <strong>(91 mph at Horseshoe Shoal MA)<\/strong>, heavy rain <strong>(4.83 inches at Bass Harbor ME)<\/strong>,  high seas <strong>(46.0 foot waves at Buoy 44011)<\/strong>, and even heavy snow <strong>(6.0 inches at Fort Kent ME)<\/strong>. AWIPS images of the GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;water vapor&#8221; channel <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed a very pronounced warm\/dry band <em>(orange enhancement)<\/em> just south of the main cloud shield along the southern quadrant of the storm. This  particular water vapor  signature often indicates a potential for very strong winds at the surface as momentum from aloft is transferred downward into the boundary layer; the southern flank is also a <a href=\"http:\/\/novaweather.net\/Uploads\/noel_florence_schematic_compare.gif\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"extratropical storm schematic\"><strong>favored area for strong surface winds<\/strong><\/a> in an extratropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS image of the 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m MODIS water vapor channel around 02:45 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> with 03 UTC surface reports reveals that Fixed Buoy 41048 <em>(located west of Bermuda, station ID TXKF)<\/em> was situated near the leading edge of the water vapor dry band, and experienced a peak wind gust (from the south) of 62 knots near the time of the MODIS image.
