SeaWinds scatterometer data from the  <a href=\"http:\/\/winds.jpl.nasa.gov\/missions\/quikscat\/\" title=\"QuikSCAT\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>QuikSCAT<\/strong><\/a> satellite around 10:48 UTC  <em><strong>(above, and below)<\/strong><\/em> did show two wind retrievals of <strong>74 knots<\/strong> just to the northwest of the storm center. However, those two 74 knot wind speed points had the &#8220;Rain Flag&#8221; active <em>(all the wind barbs with <strong>circles<\/strong> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071102_quikscat.jpg\" title=\"CIMSS Tropical Cyclones TCTrak display\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>CIMSS Tropical Cyclones TCTrak display<\/strong><\/a> have the Rain Flag active)<\/em>, meaning that the presence of rainfall may have contaminated the data at those points &#8212; energy backscattered from large rain drops can constitute a significant (but unknown) portion of the measured echo energy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071102_ir_quikscat.jpg\" title=\"AWIPS GOES-12 IR + QuikSCAT winds\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/11\/071102_ir_quikscat.jpg\" title=\"AWIPS GOES-12 IR + QuikSCAT winds\" alt=\"AWIPS GOES-12 IR + QuikSCAT winds\" align=\"middle\" height=\"460\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Noel remained a minimal Category 1 hurricane early in the day on 02 November 2007, although the satellite presentation was starting to deteriorate (GOES-12 IR animation) as the storm began the transition to an extratropical system.
