The map above shows different flood gauge records along the Kankakee (<a href=\"https:\/\/water.weather.gov\/ahps2\/glance.php?wfo=lot&amp;gage=wlmi2&amp;riverid=204465\">source<\/a>).  Flooding is occurring near the Wilmington IL flood gauge.  The toggle below illustrates the small size of the Kankakee River relative to the 375-m VIIRS pixel size used in the Flood Product (available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/flood-map-demo\/flood-products\/\">here<\/a>)!  Flood detection from an ice jam will be a challenge.  (Editor&#8217;s note:  I regret not clearing my Google search\/cookies before creating this imagery, and shortly after searching for dog kennels)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1765\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/01\/VIIRS1dayComposite_11January2024toggleSatellite.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56629\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">RealEarth displays of VIIRS 1-day composite flood product (11 January 2024) and underlying terrain (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The animation below compares views on 11 January (when the ground was mostly bare), 13 January (after a snow storm and cold snap) and 14 January 2024 (12 January was a cloudy day).  The domain is larger than shown in the toggle above.  Note the change from bare ground on the 11th to snow-covered on the 13th, and the change from open water on the 11th to ice on the 14th. The small river appears to be mostly ice-covered (cyan), with occasional water detections.  There are more open water detections downstream of Lorenzo IL, where the river gauge does not suggest flood conditions.  An important question would be:  are the water detections close to Wilmington showing water associated with the ice jam? A news story on the 22nd (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjol.com\/visible-improvement-along-kankakee-river-dye-to-ice-jams-upd\/\">link<\/a>) suggests the ice jam effects are lessening, in part because of the diversion of warm water from a power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Sentinel-2 imagery from 20 January 2024 (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.sentinel-hub.com\/eo-browser\/?zoom=14&amp;lat=41.34797&amp;lng=-88.19301&amp;themeId=DEFAULT-THEME&amp;visualizationUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fservices.sentinel-hub.com%2Fogc%2Fwms%2Fbd86bcc0-f318-402b-a145-015f85b9427e&amp;datasetId=S2L2A&amp;fromTime=2024-01-20T00%3A00%3A00.000Z&amp;toTime=2024-01-20T23%3A59%3A59.999Z&amp;layerId=1_TRUE_COLOR&amp;demSource3D=%22MAPZEN%22\">link<\/a>) can be matched to drone images show at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjol.com\/visible-improvement-along-kankakee-river-dye-to-ice-jams-upd\/\">this news link<\/a>, as shown in the toggle below. A <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/01\/NWSFloodWarning_22January2024.png\">flood warning<\/a> remains in effect for this event through 29 January 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Sentinel-1A overflew this region at 2349 UTC on 23 January 2024, and the SAR Ice image is shown below.  Cyan is ice, blue is open water.  The Kankakee River is still largely ice-covered, but with some fracture ice.
