{"id":562,"date":"2007-10-26T23:55:10","date_gmt":"2007-10-26T23:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/10\/26\/smoke-from-local-and-distant-sources\/"},"modified":"2007-10-29T14:39:27","modified_gmt":"2007-10-29T14:39:27","slug":"smoke-from-local-and-distant-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/562","title":{"rendered":"Grand Canyon, Arizona: smoke from local and distant sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/299\/2007-10-26_2030-2038_HGCN_010403_QKM.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/299\/2007-10-26_2030-2038_HGCN_010403_QKM.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"373\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An end to the offshore Santa Ana wind regime and a change in the synoptic-scale flow pattern over the southwestern US (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/10\/MODIS_VIS_20071026_2030.png\" title=\"RUC winds at 1 km and 2km AGL\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MODIS visible image + RUC model winds at 1 km and 2km AGL<\/strong><\/a>) resulted in a northward to northeastward transport of smoke from the ongoing Southern California fires on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20071026.html\" title=\"26 October 2007 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>26 October 2007<\/strong><\/a>. A 250-meter resolution MODIS true color image centered over the Grand Canyon in Arizona <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> shows a distinct smoke plume from a new fire that was burning along the north rim of the canyon, as well as a large amount of smoke covering the western portion of the Grand Canyon <em>(which had been transported from the California fires)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A larger-scale MODIS true color image of the Southwest US <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> shows that the smoke from the southern California fires had spread as far as the San Joaquin Valley of California <em>(even settling into some of the valleys along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range)<\/em>, southern Nevada, northwestern Arizona, and extreme southwestern Utah. The <a href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/index.php\" title=\"IDEA site\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>IDEA<\/strong><\/a> MODIS <a href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/index.php?plot_type=traj_fx&amp;product_date=20071025\" title=\"Aerosol Optical Depth trajectory product\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Aerosol Optical Depth trajectory product<\/strong><\/a> from the previous day provided a fairly accurate forecast of smoke transport.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/299\/2007-10-26_2030-2038_USSW_010403_HKM.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2007\/299\/2007-10-26_2030-2038_USSW_010403_HKM.jpg\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" align=\"middle\" height=\"372\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An end to the offshore Santa Ana wind regime and a change in the synoptic-scale flow pattern over the southwestern US (MODIS visible image + RUC model winds at 1 km and 2km AGL) resulted in a northward to northeastward transport of smoke from the ongoing Southern California fires on 26 October 2007.
