{"id":56109,"date":"2023-12-14T20:42:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T20:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=56109"},"modified":"2023-12-22T03:09:01","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T03:09:01","slug":"observations-of-strong-winds-in-the-gulf-of-tehuantepec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/56109","title":{"rendered":"Observations of strong winds in the Gulf of Tehuantepec"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sentinel-1A&#8217;s overpass over the Gulf of  Tehuantepec shortly after 0000 UTC on 13 December, shown above in a toggle with topography, corresponded with the beginning of an event of strong winds (colloquially called a &#8220;Tehuantepecker&#8221;) cause by funneling of wind through the Chivela Pass in the Sierra Madre mountains.  At 0031 UTC, the time of the overpass (Normalized Radar Cross Section fields at that time are <a href=\"https:\/\/ovl.oceandatalab.com\/?date=2023-12-13T12:00:00\u00d7pan=1d&amp;extent=-11662914.716911_1150215.5185182_-9737924.596845_2230117.8539808\u00a2er=-10700419.656878_1690166.6862495&amp;zoom=7&amp;products=3857_SAR_roughness&amp;opacity=100&amp;stackLevel=100.02&amp;selection=1&amp;filter=+A,+B,+IW,+EW,+SM,+WV,+VV,+HH\">here<\/a>; note also the wind field on 17 December!), winds are near 40 knots over the Pacific Ocean, and the wind structure has a noticeable banded structure.  This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/sarwinds_s1.php?date=20231213\">NOAA\/STAR website<\/a> also allows a user to view the Sentinel-1A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images2\/2023-12\/S1A_ESA_2023_12_13_00_31_49_0755742709_095.25W_16.15N_VV_C_nrcs.png\">NRCS fields<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images2\/2023-12\/S1A_ESA_2023_12_13_00_31_49_0755742709_095.25W_16.15N_VV_C5_GFS025CDF_wind.png\">the winds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1228\" height=\"854\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/12\/Topo_and_S1AWinds-20231212_2001.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56113\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sentinel-1A SAR Winds, 0031 UTC on 13 December 2023 as well as Topography (Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) winds over the same region similarly outline very strong winds from this event, over two days, with winds up to 40 knots.
