{"id":5598,"date":"2010-05-11T23:59:41","date_gmt":"2010-05-11T23:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=5598"},"modified":"2010-05-20T15:06:37","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T15:06:37","slug":"update-on-the-deepwater-horizon-oil-slick-in-the-gulf-of-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/5598","title":{"rendered":"Update on the Deepwater Horizon oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100511_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color (bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (bands 7\/2\/1) RGB images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100511_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color (bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (bands 7\/2\/1) RGB images\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color (bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (bands 7\/2\/1) RGB images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of  MODIS true color (using bands 1\/4\/3) and false color (using bands 7\/2\/1) Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2010_05_11_131&#038;overlay_sector=false&#038;overlay_state=true&#038;overlay_coastline=true&#038;sector=USA7&#038;resolution=2000m\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> again revealed the areal extent of the surface portion of the oil slick just off the Louisiana coast in the northern Gulf of Mexico on <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20100511.html\">11 May 2010<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>An animation of MODIS true color RGB images <em>(created using bands 1\/4\/3)<\/em> from days when the geometry of the sun glint was favorable <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed the changes in areal coverage and shape of the surface oil slick feature during the 21 days following the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deepwater_Horizon\">Deepwater Horizon<\/a><\/strong> offshore oil rig explosion (which occurred late in the evening on 20 April: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/5240\">CIMSS Satellite Blog<\/a> | <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/visit\/blog\/index.php\/2010\/04\/30\/oil-and-water-really-dont-mix\/\">VISIT Meteorological Interpretation Blog<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>). The first image on 21 April shows the smoke plume drifting southeastward from the oil rig site <em>(before it eventually collapsed)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100421-0511_modis_truecolor_oilslick_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS true color images (21, 22, 25, and 29 April and 01, 04, 08, 09, 10, and 11 May)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100421-0511_modis_truecolor_oilslick_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS true color images (21, 22, 25, and 29 April and 01, 04, 08, 09, 10, and 11 May)\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color images (21, 22, 25, and 29 April and 01, 04, 08, 09, 10, and 11 May)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the use of the 16-channel <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/abi\/\">ABI instrument<\/a><\/strong> on the upcoming <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/\">GOES-R<\/a><\/strong> satellite, the capability to generate and display these types of RGB images will be possible at high temporal resolution <em>(every 5 minutes on a routine basis)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><center><strong><font color=red>=====<\/font> 17 MAY UPDATE <font color=red>=====<\/font><\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100517_modis_vis_sst_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS visible image + MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/05\/100517_modis_vis_sst_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS visible image + MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS visible image + MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS images of MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data and the MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20100517.html\">17 May 2010<\/a><\/strong> <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> revealed that a long, thin portion of the oil slick had been drawn southward and southeastward, possibly becoming entrained into the far northern circulation of the Gulf of Mexico <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/4688\">Loop Current<\/a><\/strong>. The MODIS SST values within the Loop Current were very warm &#8212; as high as 82\u00c2\u00ba F <em>(darker red color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A closer view using 250-meter resolution MODIS true color <em>(using bands 1\/4\/3)<\/em> and false color <em>(using bands 7\/2\/1)<\/em> RGB images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=t1&#038;product=true_color&#038;date=2010_05_17_137&#038;overlay_sector=false&#038;overlay_state=true&#038;overlay_coastline=true&#038;sector=USA7&#038;resolution=2000m\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed better detail of the long oil slick plume that was moving southward. <\/p>\n<p>It is unclear why the far eastern end of the oil slick plume appears so dark on the MODIS images; one idea is that a great deal of oil dispersant  had been spread over the leading edge of the plume, which then greatly reduced the amount of solar energy being reflected back up toward the satellite.
