This dense smoke+fog plume rapidly reduced visibility along a portion of Interstate 10, resulting in several accidents (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox8live.com\/2023\/11\/07\/multiple-accidents-close-both-directions-i-10-nola-east-super-fog-limits-visibility\/\"><strong>media report<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A plot of rawinsonde data from New Orleans at 1200 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that there was a pronounced and very shallow temperature inversion just above the surface, which was trapping the dense wildfire smoke+fog near the surface and preventing its vertical dispersion (until a few hours after sunrise, when boundary layer mixing began to increase).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/11\/231107_1200utc_klix_raob.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/11\/231107_1200utc_klix_raob.png\" width=\"1920\" height=\"962\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plot of rawinsonde data from New Orleans at 1200 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 08 Nov Update =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/11\/231108_goes16_nighttimeMicrophysicsRGB_visible_LA_smoke_fog_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/11\/la_vis-20231108_141617.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Nighttime Microphysics RGB and daytime &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images, from 1026 UTC to 1631 UTC [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/11\/231108_goes16_nighttimeMicrophysicsRGB_visible_LA_smoke_fog_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>On the following day, GOES-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb2.cira.colostate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/QuickGuide_GOESR_NtMicroRGB_Final_20191206-1.pdf\"><strong>Nighttime Microphysics RGB<\/strong><\/a> and daytime Visible images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed another smoke+fog plume, which persisted long enough after sunrise to impact traffic along the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
