{"id":553,"date":"2007-10-21T23:55:47","date_gmt":"2007-10-21T23:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/10\/21\/wildfires-in-southern-california\/"},"modified":"2007-10-26T20:16:24","modified_gmt":"2007-10-26T20:16:24","slug":"wildfires-in-southern-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/553","title":{"rendered":"Wildfires in southern California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/10\/071021_g11_ir2_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images (Animated GIF)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/10\/071021_g11_ir2_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-11 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images (Animated GIF)\" title=\"GOES-11 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hot and dry Santa Ana conditions across southern California (with wind gusts as high as <strong>91 mph<\/strong> in Los Angeles county and <strong>87 mph<\/strong> in Ventura county) caused widespread blowing dust\/sand <em>(reducing surface visibility to 3 miles at Ontario, station identifier KONT)<\/em> and created an  environment that allowed several large wildfires to burn out of control on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20071021.html\" title=\"21 October 2007 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>21 October 2007<\/strong><\/a>. Note that the dew point temperature at Ontario dropped from 50\u00c2\u00baF (+10\u00c2\u00ba C) down to +2\u00c2\u00baF (-17\u00c2\u00ba C) in a 3-hour period once the strong northeasterly Santa Ana winds developed. AWIPS images of the GOES-11 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed very hot pixels <em>(black to yellow to red enhancement)<\/em> associated with the larger fires (including one fire that caused multiple injuries and at least one fatality near San Deigo, and another fire farther to the north near Malibu &#8211; just northwest of Los Angeles KLAX &#8211; which shut down portions of the Pacific Coast Highway).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"IDEA\"><strong>IDEA<\/strong><\/a> MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> and GOES-11 visible imagery <em><strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/10\/071021_g11_vis.mov\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 visible images (QuickTime animation)\">QuickTime animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> revealed several large plumes of smoke (which could have also contained some blowing dust and\/or blowing sand) drifting westward over the adjacent offshore waters of the Pacific Ocean.
