With sufficient illumination from the Moon (which was in the Waning Crescent phase, at 41% of Full), a nighttime Suomi-NPP VIIRS Day\/Night Band (0.7 \u00b5m) image <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/polar_orbit_tracks\/data\/NPP\/2023\/2023_10_07_280\/HIMAWARI.gif\"><strong>valid at 1625 UTC<\/strong><\/a> <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed Bolaven as it was centered about 200 miles northeast of Chukk International Airport (METAR identifier PTKK) on Weno Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jma.go.jp\/jma\/indexe.html\"><strong>JMA<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Himawari-9\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/mscweb\/en\/himawari89\/space_segment\/spsg_ahi.html\"><strong>AHI<\/strong><\/a> Infrared Window (11.2 \u00b5m) images from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong>CIMSS Tropical Cyclones<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that Bolaven was moving through an environment of low to moderate <a href=\"https:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/misc\/winds\/info.winds.shr.html\"><strong>deep-layer wind shear<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; and deep convection was beginning to increase south of the storm center.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1064px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/10\/231007_himawari9_infrared_1500utc_shear_Bolaven_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/10\/231007_himawari9_infrared_1500utc_shear_Bolaven_anim.gif\" width=\"1054\" height=\"704\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">JMA Himawari9 Infrared Window (11.2 \u00b5m) images, with an overlay of deep-layer wind shear at 1500 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A Himawari-9 Infrared \/ Water Vapor Difference product (<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/view\/journals\/wefo\/24\/6\/2009waf2222284_1.xml\"><strong>reference<\/strong><\/a>) <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> highlighted areas of deep convection where overshooting tops were likely penetrating the local tropopause <em>(yellow to red to violet enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1064px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/10\/231007_himawari9_infrared_waterVapor_difference_Bolaven_anim.gif.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/10\/231007_himawari9_infrared_waterVapor_difference_Bolaven_anim.gif.gif\" width=\"1054\" height=\"704\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">JMA Himawari-9 Infrared \/ Water Vapor Difference images [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Bolaven was also traversing very warm warm water, where Sea Surface Temperature and Ocean Heat Content values were rather high <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/10\/231007_seaSurfaceTemperature_oceanHeatContent_Bolaven_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/10\/231007_seaSurfaceTemperature_oceanHeatContent_Bolaven_anim.gif\" width=\"1540\" height=\"1052\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea Surface Temperature and Ocean Heat Content [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Bolaven formed southeast of the Mariana Islands at 1200 UTC on 07 October 2023 (about 540 miles southeast of Guam, according to the initial advisory issued by JTWC).
