The animation, from 0121 to 0556 UTC on 21 September 2023, shows the steady progression of cloud lines moving east-to-west, with embedded regions of apparent showers that generate outflow boundaries.  At <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/09\/goeswest_abi_radc_true_color_night_20230921043117.png\">0431 UTC<\/a>, Sentinel-1A overflew the eastern Hawai&#8217;ian islands, and a high-resolution picture of the surface winds resulted (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/sarwinds_s1.php?date=20230921\">Data are available online<\/a> as well:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images2\/2023-09\/S1A_ESA_2023_09_21_04_31_42_0748585902_155.85W_20.65N_VV_C_nrcs.png\">Normalized Radar Cross Section Data<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov\/socd\/mecb\/sar\/AKDEMO_products\/APL_winds\/wind_images2\/2023-09\/S1A_ESA_2023_09_21_04_31_42_0748585902_155.85W_20.65N_VV_C5_GFS025CDF_wind.png\">Winds<\/a>).  The three wind footprints are stitched together below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong winds &#8212; nearly 30 knots &#8212; are associated with a modest looking (and decaying) convective cell just to the east of Maui.  None of the convection in this scene reaches particularly high into the atmosphere;  cloud top brightness temperatures are in the 5-10<sup>o<\/sup> C range.  The <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.uwyo.edu\/cgi-bin\/sounding?region=naconf&amp;TYPE=GIF%3ASKEWT&amp;YEAR=2023&amp;MONTH=09&amp;FROM=2100&amp;TO=2100&amp;STNM=91285\">Hilo Sounding at 0000 UTC on 21 September 2023<\/a> shows a tradewind inversion top at 750 hPa, suggesting the clouds reached to about that level.  (The strong winds of the Alenuihaha channel are also shown!)
