A large convective burst was evident just northeast of the storm center.<\/p>\n<p>Overlapping 1-minute Mesoscale Domain Sectors provided 30-second GOES-16 \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images (with\/without an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density) and &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images during the 10-hour period from 1000-2000 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. Cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures were as cold as -90C (yellow pixels embedded within darker purple areas) &#8212; and occasional bursts of lightning activity were seen.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/08\/230829_goes16_visible_infrared_glmFlashExtentDensity_Hurricane_Idalia_1000utc_2000utc_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/08\/id_ir-20230829_150027.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">30-second GOES-16 \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m) images (with\/without an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density) and &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images, 1000-2000 UTC [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>Odalia had been moving northward across warm <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/08\/230829_sst_Odalia.png\"><strong>Sea Suface Temperatures<\/strong><\/a>, and intensified to a hurricane as it traversed a ribbon of high <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/08\/230829_ohc_Odalia.png\"><strong>Ocean Heat Content<\/strong><\/a>.
