The large satellite viewing angle &#8212; which is 73.5 degrees for Fairbanks (station identifier PAFA) &#8212; provided an oblique perspective that nicely displayed the vertical buildup of towering cumulus as well as the formation of thunderstorm anvils.<\/p>\n<p>In the corresponding 1-minute GOES-18 \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images\u00a0<em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, the coldest thunderstorm tops exhibited infrared brightness temperatures around -60\u00baC (darker shades of red).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230724_goes18_infrared_AK_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/ak_ir-20230724_230055.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 &#8220;Clean&#8221; so for the thunderstorms that produced <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230724_pafg_lsr.text\"><strong>wind damage<\/strong><\/a> east-southeast and southeast of Fairbanks at 0315 UTC and 0330 UTC, their cloud tops (at an average altitude around 30000 ft) were actually displayed about 32 km (20 miles) to the north-northwest of their true location over the surface <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>The parallax displacement was apparent in a closer view of 1-minue GOES-18 Visible and Infrared images, centered near Fairbanks, with plots of Severe Thunderstorm Warning polygons <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230724_goes18_visible_infrared_severeThunderstormWarnings_AK_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/ak_vis_zoom-20230725_025955.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 &#8220;Red&#8221; which, according to a plot of 0000 UTC rawinsonde data from Fairbanks <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, represented an altitude just above the Equilibrium Level (EL) of a Most Unstable (MU) air parcel.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1708px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230725_0000utc_pafa_raob.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230725_0000utc_pafa_raob.png\" width=\"1698\" height=\"825\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plot of rawinsonde data from Fairbanks, Alaska at 0000 UTC on 25 July [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These thunderstorms occurred on a day that Fairbanks set a new daily record high temperature of 90\u00baF &#8212; and a Cooperative Observer in the Fairbanks area reported a high temperature of 92\u00baF (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230725_pafg_rtp.text\"><strong>Regional Temperarture and Precipitation<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fairbanks officially hit 90\u00b0F on Monday. The last time that the Fairbanks airport officially hit 90 degrees before Monday was back in June of 2017.
