{"id":53234,"date":"2023-07-03T23:05:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T23:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=53234"},"modified":"2023-10-13T19:43:48","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T19:43:48","slug":"actinoform-cloud-produces-light-rain-in-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/53234","title":{"rendered":"Actinoform cloud produces light rain in Hawai`i"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/goeswest_abi_radc_true_color_night_s20230703140119_e20230704015619_f144.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/goeswest_abi_radc_true_color_night_20230703205119.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 Nighttime Microphysics RGB and daytime True Color RGB images [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>GOES-18 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_GOESR_NtMicroRGB_Final_20191206.pdf\"><strong>Nighttime Microphysics RGB<\/strong><\/a> and daytime True Color RGB images from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:0,0;satellite:goeswest;num_frames:40;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> displayed the cyclonic circulation of an <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/view\/journals\/bams\/85\/10\/bams-85-10-1585.xml\"><strong>actinoform<\/strong><\/a> cloud feature as it moved westward toward Hawai`i on 03 July 2023.<\/p>\n<p>A closer view using GOES-18 &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_DayCloudPhaseDistinction_final_v2.pdf\"><strong>Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB<\/strong><\/a> images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the actinoform cloud as it approached the island of Oahu. 15-minute METAR surface reports revealed that one of the actinoform&#8217;s &#8220;spiral bands&#8221; produced brief (20-30 minute) periods of light rain and\/or drizzle &#8212; first at Kaneohe Bay (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230703_PHNG_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>PHNG<\/strong><\/a>) beginning around <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/hi_rgb-20230704_020119.png\"><strong>0201 UTC<\/strong><\/a>, and then at Wheeler Air Force Base (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230703_PHHI_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>PHHI<\/strong><\/a>) beginning around <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/hi_rgb-20230704_033119.png\"><strong>0331 UTC<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; as it passed over the island.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230703_goes18_visible_dayCloudPhaseDistinctionRGB_HI_actinoform_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/hi_rgb-20230704_010119.png\" width=\"1715\" height=\"830\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-18 &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB images [click to play animated GIF | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/07\/230703_goes18_visible_dayCloudPhaseDistinctionRGB_HI_actinoform_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>According to the Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_DayCloudPhaseDistinction_final_v2.pdf\"><strong>Quick Guide<\/strong><\/a>, shades of green generally denote cloud tops that are beginning to glaciate &#8212; but in this case, a GOES-18 Day Cloud Phase Distinction RGB image at 2301 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> included cursor-sampled values of RGB components along with the corresponding Cloud Top Phase and Cloud Top Height derived products at that same location.
