Smoke from forest fires, mostly in Canada, has overspread the upper midwest.  The motion of that smoke on 27 June is plain to see in the animation of true color imagery, below, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:-1052878,3849274;zoom:5;coverage:radc;num_frames:36;frame_stride:3;start_time:2023-06-27T12:36:17Z;timeframe:Start%20Time;\">CSPP Geosphere site<\/a>.  Smoke is especially thick over northeastern WI, and the smoke as a whole is moving southward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"822\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1420 \/ 822;\" width=\"1420\" controls loop src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/06\/goeseast_abi_radc_true_color_night_s20230627123617_e20230627212117_f36.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GOES-16 True-Color imagery (every 15 minutes), from  1236 &#8211; 2121 UTC on 27 June 2023<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also roof-top cameras pointing north. In fact, AOD values near Milwaukee (KMKE) were close to 4.0 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. Surface visibility at Kenosha (located in far southeastern Wisconsin) was as low as 3\/4 mile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1553px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/06\/230627_1501utc_kmke_metar_aod.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/06\/230627_1501utc_kmke_metar_aod.png\" width=\"1543\" height=\"775\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Aerosol Optical Depth derived product at 1501 UTC, showing the cursor-sampled AOD value of 3.95 along with the nearby METAR report at Milwaukee KMKE [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ground-based <a href=\"http:\/\/hsrl.ssec.wisc.edu\/by_site\/6\/2023\/06\/27\/pm\/#bscat_depol\"><strong>lidar<\/strong><\/a> in Madison, Wisconsin revealed significant backscatter (due to the dense smoke) from the surface to an altitude of 2-3 km during much of the daytime hours <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
