{"id":530,"date":"2007-09-24T23:16:01","date_gmt":"2007-09-24T23:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/09\/24\/mountain-waves-on-water-vapor-imagery\/"},"modified":"2007-09-27T03:31:27","modified_gmt":"2007-09-27T03:31:27","slug":"mountain-waves-on-water-vapor-imagery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/530","title":{"rendered":"Mountain waves on water vapor imagery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/NAM40_500MB_Windspeed_20070924_1500F003.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor image + NAM 500mb winds\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/NAM40_500MB_Windspeed_20070924_1500F003.png\" alt=\"GOES-12 water vapor image + NAM 500mb winds\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor image + NAM 500mb winds\" align=\"middle\" height=\"361\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Strong winds in the middle troposphere <em>(50-70 knots at 500 hPa)<\/em> were seen around the base of a large trough of low pressure that was centered over the Great Basin region of the western US <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070924.html\" title=\"24 September 2007 daily weather map\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>24 September 2007<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A sequence of three AWIPS  images of the MODIS 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;water vapor channel&#8221; from that day  <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed widespread areas of <em>mountain wave signatures<\/em> indicating that the strong winds were interacting with the rugged terrain across the southern and central Rocky Mountains. These types of mountain waves are known to be a satellite signature of lee turbulence; the pilot reports of  turbulence were only isolated around  the times of the 3  MODIS images <em>(05:13, 09:22, and 20:30 UTC)<\/em>, but it could be that no aircraft were flying in the exact areas (or altitudes)  where the lee wave signatures (and any associated turbulence) might have been present.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070924_modis_wv_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS water vapor images (Animated GIF)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070924_modis_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" title=\"MODIS water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"365\" width=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The corresponding sequence of three GOES-12 water vapor images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> did indicate a few of the more well-defined areas of mountain waves signatures <em>(especially over central Colorado)<\/em>, but the presentation of these features using 4-km resolution GOES data was not as clear as it was using the 1-km resolution MODIS data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070924_goes_wv_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor images (Animated GIF)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/09\/070924_goes_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor images (Animated GIF)\" align=\"middle\" height=\"363\" width=\"483\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Strong winds in the middle troposphere (50-70 knots at 500 hPa) were seen around the base of a large trough of low pressure that was centered over the Great Basin region of the western US (above) on 24 September 2007.
