On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20230528.html\"><strong>28 May<\/strong><\/a>, strong westerly winds within the warm sector of a midlatitude cyclone caused a rapid eastward expansion of the fire&#8217;s thermal signature.<\/p>\n<p>A sequence of GOES-16 True Color RGB and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/QuickGuide_GOESR_NtMicroRGB_Final_20191206.pdf\">Nighttime Microphysics RGB<\/a><\/strong> images during 27-31 May from the <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#playing:true;coordinate:0,46783;zoom:0.8;num_frames:30;\"><strong>CSPP GeoSphere<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the varying daytime smoke transport along with the fire&#8217;s nocturnal thermal anomaly (darker shades of purple) during that same 5-day period.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/230527_230531_goes16_trueColorRGB_nighttimeMicrophysicsRGB_Nova_Scotia_wildfires_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2023\/05\/goeseast_abi_radc_true_color_night_20230529195117.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a0GOES-16 True Color RGB and Nighttime Microphysics RGB images, 27-31 May [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>In a toggle between NOAA-20 VIIRS True Color RGB and False Color RGB images valid at 1700 UTC on 31 May <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, individual smoke plume point sources could be seen in the True Color RGB image, while the fire burn scar (darker shades of brown) and active fires (brighter shades of pink) were evident in the False Color RGB image.
